Renault Clio bangernomics content ahead

Hi guys! thought id start a thread about my lovely little clio that ive acquired over the weekend.
its on 05 plate, 1.5dci in black.
no logbook, no history, one key.
but most importantly it hasn't cost me a penny apart from the £20quid i chucked my mate with a recovery truck to collect it for me.
He brought it back to my unit, where a swift blow with the hammer released the stuck on rear brakes, and off she drove..
here it stands in all its french, tatty glory
first impressions are.. well... positive i guess.
it starts fine, runs fine, clutch is a little high, although ive priced one of those up from ECP.. 40 odd quid.
Drivers window dosent work
Drivers wing has a big crack in it.
Front bumper was red
Bonnet has dents
Therefore i have concluded that this car at somepoint has ran someone over recently
in all fairness though, its solid, has good tyres, although two need some air, it has a high quality set of jumpleads in the boot, a full size alloy as a spare and 2 12v usb plugs so currently... a win win situation..
ill keep you updated as i take a look further into it and aim to get it MOT'd soon

I bought a megane 1.5dci from a scrap man, paid a bit more than you, 500 quid. The engine sounds like s
t, but works well and starts everyday, back window was held up by wood.
I bought an ebay tuning box special and added 25 bhp and worth it. I get about 55-60mpg.
Renault get bad rep, but seems the engines are good enough for merc who use them.

and yes, this engine sounds as though it has no oil in it. but if it starts stops and drives then it will be fine to run around in.
We have a 2011 citroen c4 grand picasso, and that does a fantastic job as the daily runner and really is a brilliant car, but i couldnt pass this opportunity up.
i wont mention the MK2 golf VR6 i have tucked up in the corner, or the T25 that i blew the engine up in on the M4 on boxing day

We bought my mums three years ago for £300. It's had a clutch (£37) pair of shafts (£52) and just today a abs sensor (£30) we should really do a engine service and Cambelt but my mum refuses to spend money on it apart from mot items.
It just keeps going and going. Needs a few trivial items for another years mot

Sidelight bulb.
I'm being picky this year and making her do the advisories
Rear tyres
Rear spring
Rear exhaust mount
All in all will only set us back £100 for parts and a few hours.

Only money I have spent is on new wiper blades and a set of genuine mats.
As has been said engine sounds like s
t (mine sounds tappety when cold, almost like a blown exhaust gasket. Going to service it next week (oil and filters £30 from eBay no expense spared) and give it a good look over. Excellent work. My £150 Ebay Focus has just ticked over 84k and was on 74k when I bought it in August last year so bangers can go well.
I have a suspicion that those Clios are going to suddenly disappear from our roads in the same way the Renault 5 did, they seemed to vanish overnight. I think it's more likely a previous owner of your car had more enthusiasm than talent rather than hitting someone. Those charming rear lights suggest first car for young lad perhaps. Whatever, looks like a good fun banger project.

I've owned 3 of these.
First was a 98 bare basic, first car and one of my faves, 650 quid with a full ticket. Sold for scrap 200 and odd quid a year later. Loved it.
Paid 1200 for a newer one, sunroof leaked, and every so often it went to limp mode, quick on and off sorted that but it was annoying. I ended up putting it in a ditch at 50mph, walked away without any injury.
Third one was a huge mistake, paid 1400, dodgy gearbox and a few other problems. Couldn't stomach paying out for gearbox repairs so we used it as part ex s few month later and got 700 back. Ouch indeed.
Would love to own another just for the giggles.
