I have been witness to a business not declairing VAT and income tax, we are talking figures of over £100,000 a year tax.

I pay higher rate tax and it pi55es me off when people dont pay their fair share, Ok I know loads of people dont declare a few hundred here and there but this is a joke.

Anyway my collegue has filled out the HMRC online reporting form 3 times over the last 5 months and HMRC have done nothing about it.
You can not speak to anyone as they dont give out reginal office numbers and they will not comment on individual cases, you would think that they would want an extra 100K a year.

Can anyone help?

Maybe they are building a case?

I know I wouldn't want to prosecute someone and send them to jail without any evidence... apart from a man filling out a form online

Likely the same process as NHS Counter Fraud, case building and investigation - what have you expected to happen so far OP?

More likely to be more interested in the vat side....Vat fraud hotline 0800 788 887. And as said above, it takes months to build a case and your mate won't ever hear back unless he's called to give evidence, which is highly unlikely.

Ok I get they need to build a case but that can be done in 2weeks - one month max. This is an easy case that they know what to look for.

Looking at their website they seem to receive over 300 reports a day, so since we reported it they have had another 45,000 reports. I assume they can not investigate them all and some get dropped. Are they even looking at our report or was it binned 6 weeks ago.

Doubtful, I used to do some work with public sector fraud (NHS) and cases took up to 2yrs to prepare - anything not 100% watertight wasn’t going to be raised

Most cases took 9-18mths to get to fruition

I've been working with various agencies on a fraud/money laundering matter for the last 2 years - £millions in VAT and many victims, both corporate and private individuals affected, our company and many others have full documented audit trail, have done our statements etc and the various investigating agencies are only just about to move in on the guys, but it is still at least a year away from seeing a court room.

These investigations have two speeds. If you don't like the current speed, you really wont like the other speed!

In the normal world, yes, but this is the HMRC. If they can find a long way of doing it, they'll find it.

This,

I work in fraud (admittedly not Tax but it does encompass money laundering), the investigation will take as long as it needs to take and that could be many many months.

If you get new information as time goes by keep submitting it.

You can not speak to anyone as they dont give out reginal/local office numbers and they will not comment on individual cases. These are just reporting phone lines or general queries

I get the feeling that you want to find out specifically what's happening to get some sort of enjoyment or satisfaction out of it?

Your involvement in this is to report the relevant information to the authorities, if required they will then contact you to discuss this further other than that they won't discuss anything so as not to jeopardise any investigations (not saying you would but I can imagine the last thing they want is someone gloating about the investigation to the person they are focused on).

Of course I did.

HMRC, of all organisations only works on the basis of you complete our forms. If they have already been completed then the information has either been rejected or is waiting for the next declaration.

I think that they point is 'HMRC have done nothing' that they are aware of.

What else do you need to do other than report your suspicions? Do you really expect them to talk about investigations to you?

What do you expect to be able to see? Tax inspectors turning up at the premises? Or do you expect them to write to you saying hey thanks we have raided them and now they are in jail etc etc? They get loads of reports and will
Investigate the massive ones first. Yours may slip through the gaps but at least you reported it. Just because you didn’t doesn’t mean you have a right to see an outcome
