I've put down a deposit on a car in the UK, I intend to import back to Ireland. Anyhow RAC have given it the thumbs up except the two front tyres are near the end of their life. Contacted dealer to see if they would possibly replace or knock something off but the guy was insistent that they were within legal limits. (They are but only just )

However he then starts asking for full payment to be made before months end. I had intended to travel before the month is out then but due to work commitments it will be early next week, therefore early April.

I am reluctant to pay full amount before seeing the car for myself, obviously I know I would lose deposit at this stage if I pulled out but I'm thinking if I paid in full and for whatever reason I decided not to go with it then I wouldn't have a leg to stand on. It's not really my problem if they need to balance the books at end of month as he put it. As far as I'm concerned we have an agreement for me to purchase the car albeit it will not be until early next month now as I have not given indication of not purchasing it.

So simply should I hold my cash until I arrive over and check it out for myself or would he have some right to put car up for sale again if I didn't pay by months end?

Thanks all

Gary C

Don't pay

If it goes before you can get there, it's not meant to be

Unless it's some ultra rare classic you absolutely must have even if it's not as good as you believe.

Did you agree to pay in full before the month end when they took your deposit?

If so they have every right to put it back on sale.

If not then they're being unreasonable for a delay of only a week.

No the only thing written down on the order form was subject to inspection. Nothing about having to pay in full before month end. Unless it was in the small print (on the other side of of same document )which wasn’t scanned across to me...

Sounds unreasonable then, you're only a week later then you you told them?

If they cancel the sale and keep your deposit take them to small claims court.

Or if you paid by credit card do a chargeback, but you'll have to explain the dealer has cancelled the sale on a point that wasn't agreed at the point of sale.
