South Wales police have set up an on line system that members of Brake and similar can use to snitch on you making progress.

No doubt other forces have done the same. Its an open invite to the self righteous to express their disapproval of you enjoying your vehicle. So be warned

WIshed we had the privacy laws as they have in Germany where dashcam footage is not allowed to be used.

Just think how easy it will be to get other people in trouble by making up some fake plates to create a car that looks like someone else's and then record it doing 70 in a 30 on your dashcam.

You would not be connected to the fake car in any way, you are just a witness..

Rather an elaborate subterfuge... Identical vehicle, making up another set of plates..

You don't think members of the public should not report other members of the public whom they think are breaking the law?

Fair enough. I think I understand.

But where would you draw the line? Where would you say 'whoa, hang on, that's different'?

Burglary?
Shop lifting?
House breaking?
Assault?
Grievous bodily harm?
Child abuse?
Manslaughter?
Murder?

There must be a point somewhere where you would say, 'No, that is a bridge too far'.

No?

Do you report someone for smoking weed in their own house?

How about doing 80 down an empty country road?

Depends how much you want to screw someone over but it's pretty easy to get some plates made up and rent specific model /colour car for a day I would think? I haven't actually tried.

Might cost you £50 but the victim would struggle to avoid prosecution if they don't have a solid alibi!

People like brake will probably report someone for those two things to. Some people have a knack for poking their noses in other people's lives.

Why bother having a police force that is funded by the state when you can just get MOP to police the state for you?

Do you get anything for uploading a video that leads to a conviction? Perhaps they could organise a tie-in with Sainsburys or some other retailer? Four convictions and you get 6 free doughnuts?

Privatisation in action!

Maybe reporting a crime that has a victim?

There is a huge demand for Police to "do something" and no doubt that is one fo the reasons many drivers have dash cams.

In South Wales, the system allows members of the public to provide their evidence and for it to be reviewed by a suitably qualified and experienced person, then deal with any offences.

Its not difficult or complicated and it may make the roads safer too.

There is the full range of folks from those who would report the slightest transgression, to those who would witness a person killed in front of them and not only do nothing to stop it, but not come forwards as a witness etc too.

Plenty of professional drivers have enough GPS and camera tech in their vehicles, provided by their employers - why would the possibility that someone would submit your driving make any difference to you?

Off-duty Police Officers can (and do) deal with poor driving, dash cams and Op Snap mean that more poor driving can be appropriately addressed.

No issues.

Where is this "huge demand" ?

I have no interest in snitching on fellow drivers, and have never seen anything worth reporting in the last 40 years.

Making progress = speeding right? If you want to speed, go drive on a track or go somewhere were the speed limits are higher. If not keep to the speed limit, don't drive like a knob and if you get caught take it on the chin and think of those times you haven't been caught.

I think its a good thing. If it makes the roads safer then it can't be a bad thing.

I agree with you, although your example is a bit weird. You must be one mahoosive bloke to singlehandedly be able to negate national demand all by yourself wink

Nothing will come of most of these. Most dashcam wkers will incriminate themselves on their videos and even fewer will want to go to court. The police comments about only 1-2% going to Court is about all of the cases they receive I would assume. It needs to be 100% on those who elect to take that route to fight their corner. Of course, two wrongs don’t make a right, so. It an ideal defence.

I don’t think we should worry about this, as there are other schemes running elsewhere and I don’t think anyone on here has suffered yet. It’d be great if they’re nicking all the old biddies dawdling along and the 40mph everywhere brigade though.

That's great if you catch someone keying your car on your dashcam.

I hate to bring the tone of the thread down with logic and actual facts, but how exactly would I know someone was smoking weed in their own house? Exactly. So it follows that I couldn't report them for that.

And you could drive at 180 mph down an EMPTY country road and not get reported, on account of how the road is EMPTY and therefore there's no-one to witness your driving God awesomeness.

You see how this works, right?

As far as the weed thing goes, you might just smell it or see someone smoking a joint in their garden etc..

Centralising a system like this helps the police in terms of demand upon them and helps provide a consistent approach / response.

As someone else has said, a submitter will have to have some commitment to complete the form in the first place, so it'll probably filter out people who've witnessed something relatively minor.

Just think how easy it'll be to receive a decent custodial sentence for perverting the course of justice.

Nearly all police work is publicly generated i.e. someone contacting the police to report something.

Its policing on the cheap, if you want the dangerous drivers off the road you need qualified traffic police out on the roads catching them.

How exactly does this catch drunk, drugged, no insurance, no license, drivers on their phones etc? It doesn't.
