speedometer fails..anyone advise?

After having replaced the speed sensor from my late 1994 Griffith (4 liter, BW T5 box), the speedometer (and odometer) still does not work properly. Only when I reach about 120 kph it suddenly jumps to the right speed, but when I drop speed to about 90 kph, the meter drops slowly down to 0 again.
The old sensor was quite long (about 4 inch) with the wireloom incorporated, while the new sensor is shorter (2 inch) and has two connecting pins on top. I bought it from the TVR importer (NIMAG) in Holland, they said it was the right type. I could indeed connect the cable from the carloom on it. I adjusted it to about 4 mm of the toothwheel.
Anyone any advise what to look for to make the speedometer work again (will save me money for speeding tickets!)?

4mm is too far away. It needs to be as close as possible without actutally touching the sensor wheel.

Just bought a new one for my Griff, (96 500) and it had the 4" type and they supplied me with the 4" type. It turned out the original was too far away and was only reading after about 20mph. I adjusted the original to 1mm away (advice from dealer and as Steve says I did it by just touching the toothed wheel and then backing it off a tad, and it worked fine.
Do you have a GKN diff?? I think you will have, then I would say they have given you the wrong sender unit.
As you have the unit on try moving it closer to the toothed wheel (I managed to do this from the wheel arch without removing the exhaust. If this doesnt work it may be worth trying the old one. if this doesnt work I still have the 4" new one ready to take back for a credit to the dealer if you are interested??
