Went to look at an old Audi S3 today and found it’s not for me. Thinking of a Fiest ST now but sure which model to go for. Can anyone give some advice on the difference between the 3 models and reliability, power, day to day usage? I’ve found they’re all around the same sort of price?

Cheers guy 👍

Performance wise, they're all the same.

The difference just comes in spec. Off the top of my head:

ST-1 is the basic spec

ST-2 adds some things like privacy glass, half leather seats, keyless go etc.

ST-3 has everything ST-2 has but adds full leather, sat nav, cruise control etc.

I'm sure someone will be along to correct me if I'm wrong.

You are indeed wrong.

In terms of performance, I'm not sure a Fiesta ST is a substitute to an S3.

The Fiesta ST has about as much power as your bog-standard 2.0l diesel.

Performance yes but in terms of fun and handling down a typical B road a 2.0L diesel motor will be as fun as driving a bin lorry relatively

An ST might not be as quick in a straight line, but provides the sort of fun driving experience an S3 couldn't get close to

Awaiting the inevitable comments on these being "commonly" stolen, if that does indeed worry you, then the ST1 could be a good bet. The reason behind this is the use of a generic key with no keyless start.

The issue is, as you've highlighted, the prices are very similar and the ST1's are rarer. They also represent less value for money, as they come with a fair bit less kit than the ST2's and ST3's as standard.

It depends if you're happy with something basic or id you want a few more toys.

First S3's had 210-225bhp, hardly enough to leave an mk7 ST behind.....

I can almost guarantee that he's probably on about the later models with 265 bhp or maybe even the newest shape at around 300 bhp.

Honestly, the amount of ST1s sold was pretty low IIRC, there's a ton of ST2s and ST3 sits in the middle. For a few years, you could mix and match, spec stuff from the ST3 onto an ST2, but I think by the end they stopped that, locking things specifically to the ST3.

Almost, probably, guarantee, which is it? OP said old S3 anyway.

I'm not bothered what it is tbh, it's just hearsay at current.

"Old" S3 could mean 12 years old or it could be 3 years old. Again, it's not me stating this. I just personally think he's on about the 2.0 iterations as apposed to the first gen model, that's all.

I'll happily be corrected though.

It's a shame you need to be in ST-3 trim just to get cruise control. That seems like it should be included as standard these days.

Personally if it was my money, it would be an ST-3 or nothing.

This tells you all you need to know about the spec of each variant. And you could get cruise on the ST-2, it was an option rather than standard.

Switched 6 months ago from an ST2 to a Seat Leon 300 - not massively different from an S3.

You know what? I would rather have the ST.
