I have just had my car wrote off so am looking for a replacement. I'm also back riding motorcycles again so it seems pointless having a quick but impractical car anymore as unless you have supercar money they just don't compare.

I have avoided 4x4's before as a lot of them especially the Japanese one's have really low rent interiors. But they are starting to make more sense, plus the wife wants one and she'll be using it more day to day.

Ideally I'd like a range rover but I don't have range rover money, so I've narrowed it down to the following..

Vw tauareg 3.0tdi or the 3.2v6 (I don't do many miles)

BMW X5

XC90

I prefer the vw looks and interior but reckon the bmw will be best to drive, it's just the image that's holding me back slightly with the X5.

The xc90 I'm not 100% on the looks but the interior looks a nice place to be. Not sure about reliability etc.

Any advice on these or alternatives ?

For a start none of those are 4x4's, they are AWD, practically useless in any offroad situation, so not sure what your requirements are.

Gen IV Legacy, interior is easily on par with a BMW or Audi from same era, also handles better than either of em.

I though they were standard on the 4x4 models, maybe only the Wildtrak

Have a look at an XTrail - leather, sat nav, cruise, and quite pokey for what they are.

Do you want an off road vehicle for 5k?
- Duster or Land Cruiser.

Or, do you want a car that looks like an off roader?

I’m guessing height and looks are required rather than actual off roading ability... so I’d agree with a Lexus RX. Reliable, and decent interiors. 5k would get a sub-100k car with full Lexus history.

I currently have one of these, T30 2.5 petrol. Whilst they're OK as a runabout, and it got me through the bits of snow we've just had, I wouldn't consider it a true 4x4. It does however have plenty of interior space and is a pleasant thing to potter about in.

Agree with the post about the Subaru Legacy, or Outback if you need a bit more clearance. Marvellous cars. I'd also be looking at Jeeps in your budget just because I love the things. A Grand Cherokee WJ, or even a WK is a good comfortable car, or even a Cherokee KJ (Liberty in the US)

The ride is rock hard and I'd not like to have to repair the various OTT Starship Enterprise-like systems fitted.

Dunno what's wrong with the RX series - maybe they're specialist models in Russia because there are a lot of videos of Russians going crazy in the snow and mud with them for some reason.

SUV's are currently fashionable and priced accordingly.

£4-5,000 is middle aged Fiesta money. Are you expecting this vehicle to actually work properly as well?

I doubt I'll do any off road stuff, I just want something big and comfy to take the wife and kids out in. I've spent the last 4 years with an Alfa Romeo 3.2GT so wanted a complete change of vehicle as I've found that it's just so hard to have any kind of fun on today's roads.

S-Max, Mondeo, Galaxy, Avensis, Accord, much cheaper to buy and run.

Christ Willy. You have 11000 posts on a motoring forum and have just made the statement that £5000 will not buy you an SUV that actually works.

There's always one

I suppose if you want something tall and practical, an MPV is the way forward. After all, for most people a 4x4 is just an uneconomical MPV thanks to the 4x4 system and the added weight.

I rarely see over 20mpg unless I'm driving home late at night.
