Porsche Cayman - What to Buy?
Discussion
Hi All,
I really keen on purchasing a Porsche Cayman 987 but I'm a little confused and would like some help.
I've done some reading and from what I can see, they say stay away from the 3.4 Gen 1 but the 2.7 and 2.9 are ok and if you want a Gen 2 go for the 3.4? Is this correct?
Are the Gen 1 2.7 and 2.9 still good value for money and what should I look out for? I understand that mileage might be high and if there are ones over 100k should I ignore them?
What sort of price should I except to pay for a Gen 1? Up to 12k for something descent
Any help will be appreciated
Regards
Rachel

My old 2008 Gen 1 2.7 is up for sale in Lincolnshire at present by a trader for about £14,500.
They've had it for over a month so there's a good chance they'll be open to offers. I did notice last week the price dropped by a couple of hundred.
I did about 80k miles from new in it and nothing went wrong, apart from minor things such as handbrake switch. But, I bought the Porsche warranty every year, so that was a guarantee nothing would go wrong .
It has FPSH, but will need a new clutch soon (I expect) as it's still on the original. It's also got about 50% left on the pads and disks and had a genuine Porsche battery fitted a couple of years ago. The first one lasted about 7 years, which, if you read some of the comments on here about Porsche batteries, is unheard of. It is also on the original coils.
But, if you do look at it, the advert is wrong. It doesn't have black (they're ocean blue) sports seats or leather interior, just partial leather seats. It doesn't have have dimming mirror, nor iPod connectivity. Well it didn't when i owned it, and I assume the dealer hasn't fitted them.

Hiya All,
Happy Easter
Firstly, I would like to say thank you to all of you taking the time to respond to my question, it's very kind of you and I do appreciate the comments and suggestions. It will makes the fun of finding the right Cayman for me even more exciting but scary at the same time.
From what I've picked up from all the comments are the following:
1. Gen 1 - 2.7 better than 3.4
2. Gen 2 - 3.4 Good if you can get it within your budget
3. Mileage not a issue (As long as everything checks out)
4. Make sure it has a full service history
5. Test drive as many as possible to get an overall feel for the car and until you find the one for you - There is no rush
6. Have a Pre Purchase Inspection done on the car before purchase
7. Accept some repairs/maintenance are going to be expensive but affordable.....
8. Don't let the salesman or private owner try and fleece you, if not sure about anything, ask questions and do more research and check
9. If purchasing from Trade, check the price to make sure not been overpriced
10. Most Importantly - I LOVE DRIVING ONE!!!
Regards

Nothing wrong with Gen 2 in 2.9 guise either.
That's what I was going to go for, but I didn't fit in the cabin well at 6' 1".
Waited for a 981 when used ones dropped below £40k in 2015.
Don’t know if you have any disproportionate body parts but I too am 6’ 1” and fit perfectly well in my 2.9 Gen 2. Fantastic car. That's what I was going to go for, but I didn't fit in the cabin well at 6' 1".

In addition to the comments above, some fantastic info on this website I found last year;

He is right. And this 2.9 Boxster has been for sale forever. Possibly because it has 100k miles but it looks cheap to me at £13 grand. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162681969065
