Am I correct in assuming that the M400 gearshift is the same as the original except to changes in the shift mechanism at the gearstick end only?
If this is correct can someone tell me how much this part costs on it's own, unfitted?
Or can I make one my self from a photo - or fit one from a different manufacturer (modifications will be required).

The reason I ask this is that I now have the other half driving the car and although I have got used to it it is a pretty cumbersome shift (maybe mine is wearing out or needs adjusting).

Oh and please don't reply and say '..if you want an m400 shifter buy an M400..' I simply cannot afford one at present.

Simple solution - don't less the other half driving it !

I'm sure this question has been asked time and time again and the answer is that it can't be retro fitted due to changes required to the transmission tunnel.

Yes I remember reading this but - the M400 tunnel is smaller than the M12 so how can this be so?

It can definitely be retrofitted as someone here has had it done. I kept asking about it, but always got quoted silly figures for the work. I'd ring Bob at the factory if you want accurate info.

I recall a figure like £3,500 - they do get looser over time - perhaps the factory could improve it for you.

BTW, how old is the car (as the early one's had the cable routed over the centre of the engine and were later re-routed in a straighter line)?

Well it had a 3Litre engine, 6sp and LSD fitted in Sept. 03 so it is fairly current I believe.

£3,500 seems a lot of money if it is just the shifter under the gearstick that is changed.

... but it isn't just the shifter - AFAIR the tunnel gets modified, amongst other things and you end up with improved turning circle too. I wouldn't do it myself - cheaper to get your woman a set of bar-bells or gym membership surely!

Well I have just asked the Factory - It's 1500 quid! Basically they have to change the mountings in the tunnel and the shifter under the gearstick also the cables that go to the gearbox get changed. The carpet also has to be replaced aparently.

1500 quid + vat I presume?

Can't see it being worth it myself, unless you really want to keep the car a long time.

Well that's more like it! In the past they've quoted only for the full conversion to latest 3R/M400 spec - still not sure I could justify 1500 squids on a non-performance enhancing mod though!

Sorry I forgot to ask about whether that inc VAT or not - I have fallen foul of that before... with a rather larger bill from them...

I still don't know why the motor trade are allowed to monkey around and quote excluding VAT. Its laughable when you have to add 17.5% on top. Hardly pennies.

Guy,

The cost is actually £1550 + VAT (£1821.25 inc) and it takes 1.5 days to complete the job.

Upgrading an older shift mechanism means replacing most of the components between the lever and the 'box - you only have to look in the engine bay of an M400 to see that the mechanism is entirely different there, as well as in the tunnel.

Hope this clarifies things.
