I have just bought a 2003 3.0D BMW X5 Sport E53 with manual box but I am not exactly which model.
Air bag light was on so I borrowed a Snap-on machine from a local garage to turn it off, it asked if I had either a 306D1 or a 306D2 . Garage owner said it wouldn't matter for turning air bag light off but it would be nice to know. Anyone have any ideas as there isn't anything mentioned in the log book?

I would guess that the engine number on your V5 should tell you, but only guessing.

Apparently, 306D1 is 135kW, whilst 306D2 is 150kW. According to Wikipedia, the M57s with those outputs are the M57D30 introduced in 1998, and the M57D30TU introduced in 2003, respectively. Both were used in the X5 - as yours is on the cusp it could be either. Take a look in the drivers door sill, it should have the engine code along with model code and paint colour and tyre pressure values.

You can also put the last seven digits of your VIN into one of the many BMW VIN decoders, e.g. bimmer.work. It will give you the engine code along with the full original option list for the car.

Realoem will also give the engine code if you put the last seven digits of your chassis no in.
