Hey all, few questions for those in the know.

Buying a new (second hand) car, I already have a Golf Plus so have the practical side covered - so I am now looking for something fun yet good for too and from work etc.

I Love the scirocco body shape and style and interior, just to be clear I am talking the modern Scirocco.

I have 8k to spend in an ideal world but could stretch to 12k.

Looking for your advice on the below questions.

1 - I am looking at the blue motion 2lrt diesel as I have always had the diesel VW cars and the engines just keep going and going and going. Then the blue motion seams to have good MPG and road tax.
Would you agree? Or is there an argument to get the 1.4lrt petrel instead?
Footnote: I’m not too keen on the hike on Insurance and decrease in MPG of a 2ltr petrol.

2 - should I get the older shape circa 2012 and spend about 7-8k - or is it worth the extra to get the 2015+ model for about 11-12k? - what would you do?

3 - if you were looking for a “fun, good looking, sort of economical, non-family car” what would you get? Is scirocco the way to go? I am not really a fan of any other “hot hatch” or “hot hatch” style cars except the Golf and I already have a Golf plus although it’s bloody boring! is there an argument to get a Golf GTI?

Your thoughts are appreciated! ????

I was recently in the same predicament and I really couldn't get away from the thought that a Scirocco is effectively a mk5 Golf with different body panels. The fact you can still buy one new astounds me.

I settled for a mk7 Golf

You should go in a little more open minded. There is more out there than just VW. Be brave, lifes too short.

Agree, there are a couple of new ones at a forecourt near my house! - do you think your MK7 will hold its money as well as if you had got the Scirocco? That’s another thing I am trying to consider.

I could not agree more! - but you know how you form a habit over 15 years of driving? I have a 15 year habit of buying VW now and it’s hard to break!

To add a bit of balance, there really isn't anything wrong with the Scirocco. A friend has leased two over the last six or so years, and has now moved on to a new Audi A3, which they regret doing (despite the A3 being a lovely bit of kit).

I've driven their Sciroccos a fair bit, (both 2.0 TDi, one manual, one DSG), and I have to say, I enjoyed driving them more than I did the equivalent Golf (I've driven many Golfs, and used to own a MkV Golf 2.0 GT TDi DSG).

As other posters have said, there are many more cars out there (Audi TT, Toyota GT86, Hyundai Veloster, BMW 2-Series Coupe, Merc C-Class Coupe, etc.), but if you like VWs, and you like coupes, you could do a lot worse than a Scirocco.

Which bit of the mark 5 innards ruled it out for you?

Yeah I'd have thought so, I was looking at Sciroccos and they range from £5K to about £20K which even at the lower end of that doesn't represent good VFM considering it's just a 2005 Golf

The petrol vs diesel will be settled by your annual mileage, then that will dictate what you can get for your 8k.

2012 Scirocco GT

2011

vs 2009 Golf GTD 67k

140bhp GT

I'd probably grab the 2012 Scirocco tbh.

Or if you can go petrol I'd be buying one of these:

Hi! - thanks for the pointers there - the Renault looks great but think I would prefer a diesel, once or twice a month I have trips to Glasgow from south midlands so hope I would recoup savings on those long fast motorways + my daily commute is a slip onto motorway 15 min on there then off and I’m at work so it’s goingto spend most it’s life on the motorway.
But you are right the 2012 looks the best of that selection! Thanks again

Just went shopping and saw a scirocco R-Line at Aldi that’s almost sealed the deal - just can’t decide do I get the older models or the revisions 2015 onwards with the sharper body shape and feature led lights etc.

Would be interested to see what people think , would I just be spending an extra 4-5k for a very slightly different shape that won’t hold its money - or is the extra 4-5 k worth the spend for the newer model?

As mentioned the scirocco is a mk5 golf based car which is a car released in 2003!

Purely my view. I think the Scirocco is an ugly car, mis-styled at the rear, and with a cramped rear seat, far better to get a GT86 or BRZ.

I'd say not really but it comes down to what you want.

I’ve had my 18 plate 2.0 TSI for 2 weeks now and I love it. I just like the way it is a little different to the Golf and it drives beautifully. It’s got enough tech to keep me happy and is very comfortable. I have 2 boys (12 and 9) and they are comfortable in the back. I got mine to replace an Up! and I chose it based on the fact that it was a cheap car for my first personal lease. I understand the reservations that the folk who say it is based on the MK 5 Golf have, but honestly it did not put me off at all. I watched a few reviews and decided I’d have one of the last Scirocco’s to arrive on our shores. Looking forward to 24 months in it. Not sure if any of this helps you, but being a fellow VW nut, thought I’d add my tuppence worth.

If you’re insistent on diesel, and you could stretch your budget a bit, then I’d go for the mk7 GTD hands down. The Scirocco is a pretty car but personally I don’t feel it’s special in any way given there are quite a few on the road. Same goes for the GTD I guess but you’re getting a far superior chassis.

I see you mentioned a GTI - my mk6 DSG gets 37-38 mpg on a run, highest I’ve seen is 41 on 120 mile commute. If you can live with that then that’s another option and should be in budget for a post ‘11 model.

The GT86 / BRZ is a great shout too and is worth a look. Would beat all of the above for fun!

Hey ,

Focus and fiesta ST
Honda Civic
Mini Cooper

Nothing floated my boat - the fords were okay but didn’t feel as “solid” as the VW’s I have had / driven.
