Amazon Firestick and surround sound
Discussion
I have a Yamaha amp, Humax hard drive and LG TV with a 5+ speaker system. Set up by a AV technician from the retailer when I bought the kit. I have since bought a tuner and Blue ray but never connected it as I dont understand it all!
Anyway, finally got fibre internet last week so got Netflix which works intermitently as the Humax does seem to be able to maintain a wifi connection.
So I got a firestick, works very well, but when on the firestick on HDMI2 the sound is now back to being via the TV and I need the 5+ working as my wife has chronic tinnitus and needs the surround sound.
I had plugged the firestick into the TV, so I wasnt surpirsed that I only got TV sound, but when I swapped the Firestick to one of the free HDMIs on the amp it didnt detect the firestick. Tried following the Amazon instructions about changing the TV settings to output via the amp but it doesnt work. I have ordered an optical cable to see if I can simply connect the TV sound to the amp.
Any other ideas? At some point I want to connect up the tuner and blue ray too!

You need to tell the TV to output it's sound to the amp.
Does your TV have an HDMI with ARC?
Alternatively does your TV have an optical out?
Connect your BD player via HDMI to the amp.
Not sure I understand why you need a tuner. Hasn't your LG got one built in?

I run my Fire TV box through an HDMI audio extractor, it has SPDIF and analogue audio outputs, HDMI to TV for picture and analogue to my sound base, Sky box connected to the base via optical. Has a switch to change between 2.1 and 5.1 audio.
Edit: it's an old LG tv with no separate audio outputs.

My fire tv is plugged directly into the av receiver, as is the virgin box. The receiver then has a single hdmi lead into the tv. Obviously surround sound works fine. Can you not just do that?
AV receiver? is that my amp?I thought the general idea of an AVR (AV receiver - amp) was that you'd have almost all connections into that, then one HDMI out to the TV (or TV's plural.)

Yes. And my thoughts were the same - have you not tried to do that?

Yes I I tried plugging the firestick in a HDMI on the amp but it wasnt recognised.I thought the general idea of an AVR (AV receiver - amp) was that you'd have almost all connections into that, then one HDMI out to the TV (or TV's plural.)

I'm a bit puzzled as to why the amp won't recognise the Fire Stick. Anyone got any ideas on why that might be? If it's ARC compatible it should be a relatively recent amp.
I had the same issue yesterday with a Roku stick in the HDMI port of my new brand new soundbar. My Humax box just plugged into HDMI1 and the image appeared on the TV.But when I tried sticking the Roku in HDMI2...... nothing..........
So now the stick is in the back of the TV and the audio comes from the TV to the soundbar via optical.
It's a right cludge and has buggered up the usability of the Humax, the Roku and my CCA. Which was in the Optical port but now has to go via coax into AV1.
Sigh.
There is no "recognising" for the Yamaha amp to do. The firestick is not a usb device. To the amp it is purely a video source.
On my denon amp the front hdmi input is disabled by default and I had to unhide it in the denon settings.
Make sure you are also giving your firestick it's seperately usb power connection.
A simple test is to unplug a k own working HDMI source from your amp ( your pvr - set top box ) and plug in the firestick. It should work. Don't forget to press the home button to wake it up.
