Is there such a thing as comfortable wellies?
Discussion
We had a nice family walk yesterday near the River Test in Hampshire. The only slight downside was that for much of it, it felt like we were actually walking in the River!
I wasn't too fussed in Goretex boots and gaiters, but wife and kids did get extremely soggy feet, so I was wondering about alternatives.
The last time I wore wellies was as a kid in the seventies, and my abiding memories of them involved being so lacking in cushioning that it would've potentially been more comfortable to walk barefoot, and it felt like there was an ever present risk of trench foot, assuming they didn't either completely melt or freeze solid (I remember no middle ground) first!
Has wellie technology moved on in the intervening decades? Is it possible to find some comfortable enough for 5-10 mile hikes, ideally without breaking the bank?

I don't want to walk miles in wellies, if I'm going to be doing miles then I wear proper waterproof hiking boots, which are Scarpa for me, rest of family prefer Meindl.
Based on the recent weather and the very high streams and river locally, then for a short trip to nip the dog out for quick 30 minute walk then the cheapo lined Dunlops from Go outdoors have served me quite well.

Dunlop. £10 a pair, comfortable in right size. 10% of the price of designer wellies Made In China !
These are £8.20 something in a shop local to mew (Trago), so coupled with some gel insoles of about the same cost you have an unbeatable combo. I wear them every day in winter when walking the dogs and only seem to wear them out on the top behind my big toe, where they crease repeatedly over about a year. I have never found a pair of walking boots £50 upwards that haven't leaked after 6 months - so stopped trying. J3JCV said:
