I need a boat that.....

can work as a tender ferrying 4 of us to and from the beach to the boat, therefore approx 10'.
Will also stand drying out on an out haul, mostly sandy but with some stones, so built tough.
And finally have a removable rig so I can sail it with the kids when at the beach etc, gunter rig or two piece mast so the spars are short.
The only obvious new offering is a Walker bay 310 with sailing kit - but its too expensive a craft for where it will live etc.
Any ideas? Thinking about £500 - £800 or something??

Possibly go with a GRP one rather than wood, but other than that, yeah. When I was a kid, my father used it exactly the same way you plan too - although admittedly it dried out on mud rather than sand. I ran it into many many things (some floating, some solid) over the years, it was competant enough at being a tender (outboard or rowing) and teaching me to sail. The funny old rig on it also means the spars are small enough to stow in it "on the go", IIRC. If my kids show interest in learning to sail themselves, I'd certainly consider one myself, again.

There's a Walker Bay, upside down in my dads garden. I think there is a sailing rig too, it has the optional extra blow up fender right round like a rib. Not sure if its 10ft, maybe 8ft, he wants to sell it. Its in Southampton.

I'm thinking I could add more metal to the bottom of a wooden one, never seen a GRP one in the flesh but imagine them to be built a bit lighter for racing? There are a couple of old wood ones on the web with road trailers for around £300 - seems cheap enough to have a go at modifying one. Phud said:

Apparently these are very good, more expensive than the Walker Bay though and I would prefer something with a bit less value on the outhaul!
I spoke to Dad today.
Its a 10ft Walker Bay, with full sailing rig, it has the rubber blow up bumper around it like a rib. There is a cover, Dad says he's not sure how it fits, he thinks the cover doesn't fit over the rib tube thing. It also has a stainless steel H shape thing that allows a single point lift onto a Davit. There is a launching trolley Dad made but its crap. He bought it from the local Walker Bay agent about 5 years ago, it was nearly new and he paid £2000, he wants £1000 and is reluctant to haggle and cantankerous git! I suggested asking £800 and settling for £500. You are likely to have a better haggle with my stepmother.
It'll need a jet wash.
