Hi,

I'm having a change of circumstances and will probably be getting another car, and either the Golf Estate or Focus Estate from say 2013ish onwards are strong contenders at the moment (subject to any test drives!).

I would be looking at the pokier of the two so the 2.0 diesels.

My question is, ones with around 100k miles seem to be at the price point of approx. £6-8k. Is this a realistic figure for these cars with this kind of mileage on? What would the likely reliability be from this point on when doing 20k per annum and do either have any big known expenditure at this mileage (e.g. DPF replacement)?

Also what do people think the depreciation will be like on these? It seems cars are a lot more expensive these days than they were say five years ago for what you get!

Thanks!

The golf will have the better interior the focus would be the better drive and would be more reliable. DPF on the golf would be around £2000 fitted.

Thanks for the reply.

When would the DPF require replacement?

Can they be flushed clean to get more life out of them?

Its usually around 150k when they need replacing but the DPF's start to play up around 100k on vag cars. Its the build up of ash that kills them, the soot gets burnt off as part of the regen process. Sensors play up too, there are 4 in the VW DPF and they are in the region of £150 each.

In the old days 100k would be nothing for a diesel but with how they reduce emissions along with people not servicing them on time and with the correct oil they just don't seem to last as well. Personally i would look at buying a petrol as on runs they can cover reasonable mpg and there is a lot less to go wrong. Clutches and Flywheels seem to be weak on VW's too. So unless you are covering at least 15k then i would go for petrol, above 15k then i would go for a Ford Focus over anything diesel powered from VAG.

Thanks, although there does not appear to be much in the form of petrol alternatives that have similar performance and acceptable economy?
