So I have set the wheels in motion today to VT my Q7 as was always the plan, however, I am undertaking this slightly sooner than anticipated due to plummeting values and rising running costs ... all in its a few pennies under £30 a day it has cost me to have the Q7 over the past 2years and 55k miles - which is ludicrous frankly for what has become our family and dog hack

My issue is now what to do.

My wifes daily gets very little use (c.<2k p/a) so one choice is to just use this split between us (I am working from home a lot at current) ... I also have a megane cab in a garage on an 02 plate that sheared a suspension spring about a year ago and also now needs an MOT (as of 14th Feb). I have been quoted £200 for recovery and the spring replacement then another £40 for the MOT - there shouldnt be any failures on it - the last time it failed (or had an advisory) was 2009. My TTRS and Baur are out of the question on this smile

Other options include a shed for under £500 as I want to keep costs as low as possible while im sorting out our house build but dont know where to really start on this!

Opinions appreciated.

Fix the Renault you have/know and use it...but how many dogs and family members will be happy to travel together in a little Renault?

Subaru Legacy Outback 3 litre estate. 4x4, flat 6 engine and you can get a good older model for under £1000.

Perhaps a Volvo 940 estate?

My dog/horse/track car tow barge is a 1995 diesel Toyota 4Runner - the last one served for 9 years before rusting out and sold for £500 less than I paid. My current one has done 3 years of hard duty so far...

Odd you mention a 4Runner as I had a brand new one in Vegas recently and it was my first experience of them and loved it.

Valid point on the family use of the Megane too, luckily the dog doesn’t go in the car unless it’s vets or the beach and the later isn’t necessary in fairness ... my daughter is 3.5yr so a car seat in the back isn’t an issue currently

Hmmmm more thinking needed! smile

I just spouted all this in another thread, but...

I really enjoy my cheapish daily driver - a 2008 BMW 130i with Koni Sports and a couple of suspension geometry mods. It's hardly depreciating.

My wife has run a 2006, 3 litre Subaru Outback for the last 6 years. It hasn't missed a beat, ever. It only needed consumables, 2 drop links and 2 front suspension bushes in 100,000 miles. It's a remarkable car, quite fast, 4x4, very comfortable and it sounds rather Porsche-esque with it's flat six motor. £2500 buys a good one and it'll be worth about the same next year - it's the kind of car that's worth more when there's snow on the ground!

It's also classless (in the good way), especially when it's a bit muddy! I parked between a brand new Cayenne and another old Outback at Ascot! Both the Outbacks were muddy and had tow hitches...

I bought a Ford Mondeo shed with 1 year MOT, FSH, for £700.

It has been fine. Exceptionally dull. Might not pass its MOT without some investment, but this won't be much.

If you don't need two cars, then don't bother. Insurance, road tax, service, MOT, flat tyre etc. make it uneconomical.

I don't understand the point of a Megane Cab (especially if you have a TTRS).

I agree with the ideas posted above of "upmarket sheds" - Outback/130 i; although a Mondeo/Focus/Fiesta will be much cheaper to run.
