recording of Sky

Movies (VHS, DVD, broadcasted) are tagged with macrovision to stop copying. Sky+ wont record stuff its not supposed to either.

Does anyone get problems recording movies from Sky?telewest??

Well I have just bougth my self another DVD recorder for my home. The first was a Sony and after a year of having it, I could not record Movies from telewest.

I tryed reconnecting it, using different DVD's etc.. but in the end bought another Ram recorder.

Same problem.

So I just phoned up telewest and they have told me that most of the Paramount Movies are encripted. and most movies on sky are Paramount you cannot record them. I should have phoned them before buying a new DVD.

You pay all that money and if you work early in the morning and want to record a 10PM moves your FKed

So why have SKY movies. I think I will change and get the SKY sports unless its encripted as well.

Doesn't sound right to me. How does Sky+ work then, if the movies are encrypted?

maplin and other such electronic gizmo places sell a device that will take out the macrosvision signal, enabling a 10pm film to be watched the next day...

Macrovision (classic) works by embeding one single line of video in the picture (one non visible line of the entire image) with an alternating white/black line.

This then triggers built in copy protection into video recorders etc (or confuses the device anyhow).

I guess the maplin device just removes this line. You can get chipped dvd players that you can disable the macrovision CP because that can play hell with projectors and RPTV's.

No idea hopw sky/sky+ works tho as I assume internaly it may have other CP.
