Two wail stories, the veracity of which must be in some doubt

That didn't last long did it?

15 March 2018, former bankrupt celeb collects £65k car

4 April 2018, same celeb skint and homeless with nose rotting off (again)

I know this is way off topic but this got me thinking about "Celebs". In particular YouTube.

My daughter (along with the rest of the planet) is into the slime craze.

She was watching a video on YouTube. This video was of a pair of hands, silent and at x2 speed.

10 MILLION views.

Another, again slime but better produced had just finished a tour of the US..... MAKING SLIME. Tens of millions of views.

How does youttube monetisation work? Are these lunatics making millions?

yes Neil Ruddock, the ex Liverpool footballer featured on the Can't pay... Court Bailiff type programme, the new build detached house and shiny cars were both on tick and Bailif's left with nothing iirc.

Some are. My daughter used to watch videos by Disneycollector. If the Mail is to be believed (which it isn't of course), she was raking in $5m per year unboxing toys. And probably less exhausting than her previous career.

Youtube is full of grown ups playing with toys and raking it in. The toy manufacturers supply the popular ones with new stuff FOC. It's like one long sickly advert. Banned in our house now. Morality aside, the accents were horrific.

I'm not so clued up on this stuff but can anyone say how someone like DW would typically make an income? Former popstars at least must have some royalties flowing in if they've had any kind of success so I guess they'd never be homeless but I assume someone like Daniella Westbrook is only going to get the odd 'telling her story' type deal. But I guess even they must dry up after a while.

They have no money, nor any sense, but what they do have is a greedy agent or PR person who will pose them in front of any camera and take a cut of the spoils when the DM, OK etc pay a few quid for a page filler.

They make a few quid from the Daily Mail by agreeing to go and look at some shiny cars in a shiny car showroom while being papped.

The Daily Mail then make up a load of utter bks to go with it, the great unwashed get all out of their pram about it, and everyone's happy. smile

It works because the person who makes the video gets a slice of the income from the adverts you see played before their video. If 10million people watch the video, that is more than watch most UK TV programmes, and so getting a 5-second advert in before the video starts makes that person a few pence each time. It adds up if you're making multiple videos per week.

Plus, many channels also now sell merchandise alongside what they show on the channel, for which they get a cut as well, and other adverts on top.

120 million views from a population of 7.6 billion. Not that popular, then?

You're including the entire human demographic. It's not about popularity, it's about volume.
