Hi All,

With the roads up here getting worse and worse by the day and looking like it would the council realistically a year to fix, I am really not enjoying driving my Alfa and am having to replace suspension components every other month. I am looking to relegate it to weekend toy for a while.

With that in mind I need a new daily driver. The roads here are awful with multiple deep potholes everywhere, very high speedbumps and rough, poorly laid or worn out tarmac. I also need to drive down an unpaved farm track 6 days a week which with the recent snow has started to collapse into a ditch and has turned into a mud pool. For that reason i need something with strong and robust suspension and wheels. But I also want something that is good to drive as driving pleasure is one of my top criteria.

It'll be a long while before the Alfa Stelvio reaches my budget so in the meantime I am up for suggestions. My benchmark is the Land Rover Discovery 3, I love driving it but they are just a little too expensive. Another car I am thinking about is the Volvo XC90 but I don't know what they are like to drive.

Many thanks,

xcseventy

Volvo XC70
Subaru Outback

Thanks, I have driven a few regular v70's/s60's and have not really been impressed, they have either been too crashey or too numb. Is the XC any better?

You won't get a fun to drive 4x4 you will get a car that drives well for a 4x4 as they are two different things, with that in mind I'd recommend these:

ML280

Grand Cherokee (these use the same running gear as the ML)

Subaru Forester or Outback

Forester drives like a car, the Outback is a car!

another vote for forester or outback - both awesome, the outback may be more comfortable

Thanks all.

Subaru's eh? Never thought of them. Will certainly give them a look.

Dealer local to me has 3 XC70's in stock, might give them a look. All within budget too, a petrol manual, A diesel manual and a diesel auto.
