I'm having a real nightmare trying to find sensibly priced insurance for our company cars. I currently have insurance but it is renewal time for one of them and I can't seem to find any other insurer other than the one we are with to quote, and having a choice of one is really expensive.

Scenario is we have three cars and four mini buses/9 seat MPV's, the cars are all insured individually as any driver over 25 which in reality is most of our employees. The MPV's are insured separately under one 'mini bus' type policy which seems to work quite well, it's the cars we are having problems with.

I need to add a couple of younger drivers, one 22 and one 23 to the car policies as we have a couple of younger staff that need to drive just the cars. So as per usual when I get my renewal notice I speak to local brokers who all seem unable to get any quotes other than my current underwriters insurance, apparently there is only one insurer that does what I need... which I find a bit strange. So I'm left with one choice... and at over £1100 for a small cheap car I can't help but feel that I'm being well and truly fleeced. Especially when I have three of them.

I've tried several brokers, I've tried Direct Line but all to no avail - they all come up with the same story and it seems to be very much a closed shop. All I need is a policy that will cover all my staff age 22 and over or over 25 with the two younger ones added.

Any ideas?

Is this not a classic "fleet insurance" problem?

I've thought of that but can't find anyone that offers fleet insurance for just three cars. Unless anyone knows different?

From the first page of Google results: http://www.welldunninsurance.co.uk/vehicle-insuran...

They claim to cover fleets of as little as 2 vehicles. Page specific to "mini fleets": http://www.welldunninsurance.co.uk/vehicle-insuran...

I'm sure there are others.

I appreciate your ideas, but Well Dunn insurance are the reason I posted here, I went through their on line quote process only to be called almost straight away from someone whose first line was 'we specialise in cases of criminal records or poor driving history' then put me on hold without even saying he would do so and never came back.

I was hoping for some recommendations from other people running their own business who already have business car insurance for their staff with a broker or underwriter.

Anyone?

Fair enough. I last had fleet insurance about 15 years ago, so I'm afraid I'm otherwise out of date. Back then it was 2 cars and a van. So I'm sorry not to have a current recommendation from personal experience.

Forgot to say we were on any driver over 21 but I increased it to 25 to reduce cost.

We still have option for >21 but <25 on the policy but there is a massive excess.

Maybe that's how much it is? I'm trying to think back how many years it is, but it could be 20, I saw the figures for the fleet insurance for the company I worked for at the time, with about 200 cars, and it was £400 per car and I remember thinking that seemed quite cheap as it covered any car / any driver/ any state of licence. Any age could drive, even kids learning. Standard excess was £1000, which, in theory, the driver had to pay if at fault but in practice that was rarely enforced.

I only saw the figures as we were getting grief because that year amount being claimed was about the same as the premium and the insurer was giving us grief about it. We all had to do driver training.

I should say our vehicles are twice the cost of normal cars / vans (due to being commercials >7.5t) so I also think £1100 sounds very reasonable.

We were paying £1200-£1500 10 years ago and seen a steady rise since then.

Up until October, when we got rid of our small fleet of 3 cars, we used Alan Chapman James who latterly became Integro. They weee pretty good. Got us 3 medium sized estate cars (Auris’) for I think about £600 each although I’d have to check that.
Not sure about under 25’s though, but they used to be a very good broker. Specialised in the media and film industry too, so were not strangers to non standard requirements.
I can dig out a contact if you want.

Would it be an option to restrict the cars the younger drivers can drive and would that reduce the premium?

Yep - that's the case already, they will only drive two of the cars.

It's staggering the restrictions I'm facing - insurance is a very dark industry!

We can do fleets of 2 vehicles or more but for drivers of that age plus "any Driver" I'd say 1100 quid was reasonable.
