I have bought a new car recently (on PCP). I haven't yet seen it, but I bought it over the phone to take advantage of a manufacturer discount that was to expire. This was last week. I was told the other day that it won't be with the dealer for another week or so as it is currently on a ship, which was a bit annoying as he said it was in a depot in England, but not to big a deal.

Today I got the V5C through the post, car registered last week. Was wondering if it was normal practice to be registered as the keeper before I've actually picked up the car? Surely there's an issue with being registered keeper of a car I don't have possession of? Maybe it is but all seems a bit odd to me ... my payments presumably don't start till it is collected ...

Edit: thinking about it, it may have to have been registered by end of March to get manufacturers discount

Also, if it is registered to me do I have a duty to insure it?

Check it over carefully, small chance it's in a bodyshop having some transit damage repaired.

I know I'm a sceptic, but seen it all before.

it will have been an end of Q1 special , I take it you got a good deal?
if it wasn't registered in Q1 you wouldn't have got that deal
entirely normal therefore

If it had to be registered to get a discount then it would have been registered, so you’ll get a registration document.

So yes, very normal, it’s your car and registered to you, just gotta wait for it to turn up! smile

Yeah I presume this is it, 5300 manufacturers deposit contribution.

They did however spell my name wrong however...

I presume I don't need to insure it till I have it ?

Happened with my thrilling Dacia purchase in 2017. V5 arrived at home a week before the car arrived 'from the import centre' oop North.

Asked the dealer to phone me when they had the car ready to drive away and insured it an hour before collection.

Believe there's a 14 day insurance cancellation period should the car be dinked/ blemished on collection.

When I bought my Fiesta I got the V5 a few days before it was registered, the V5 had the correct registration date on it though

I have been given 7 days free insurance for the last two new cars, that commenced on delivery day to me.

In both cases, I arranged insurance immediately after I accepted the car.

Just think of all those lease and finance companies with filing cabinets full of V5Cs for cars they've never seen...

Absolutely. It would have been taxed from the date of registration, and tax requires insurance to be in place. If not, the RK is in the chair...

I thought that might have been the case, but I don't really want my insurance to cover it falling off the back of a transporter (and I'm not sure my insurer will either)...

Same here, last two cars I've bought from a dealer we traded in, so they included a 7 day insurance from the dealer to cover the period to sort new insurance

I rang the dealer and they said I don't need to insure it ... "there is leeway given it is a brand new car".

Not sure whether to believe them or not . . .

If the first tax payment is in a low band, then you'll lose the benefit of that on the re-tax.
If the first tax payment was in a high band, then you'll not get any pro-rata portion of it back.

You won't be driving it, until you insure it, and the Registered Keeper is not the "owner", so personally I wouldn't sweat it.
