I'm going to buy my Nan (88 years old) a new TV as her 12 year old one is on its last legs, the picture quality is terrible, remote is broken, sound is distorting and I'm having to regularly re tune the digital TV channels for her.

She doesn't have the internet so am I correct to assume this will severely limit the type pf TV I can get her, meaning that a smart TV would be useless and even one (which most of them seem to come with now) with free sat etc on them?

Just a bog standard digital TV & hook it up/install a new aerial?

Even freesat and a satalite dish... I don't think it needs Internet, as the planner comes with the feed doesnt it?

Edit; double check the above...

Why would it matter if the TV had SMART capabilities? I don't connect mine to the internet it runs fine on just Freeview

The smart features don’t have to be used as suggested, I bought a Samsung for my dad who didn’t have broadband and it functioned fine.
Not sure about the software update side of things and how that affects the tv long term.

Meh, whenever you visit X times a year set up a mobile hot-spot, connect TV to your WiFi, check for updates, job done.

In reality, you would be lucky to get more then a couple of software updates in a given TV's life.

I got this for my 88 year old aunt. She's very happy with it

Considerations are -
- Is the remote big enough and clear enough for someone with poor eyesight and limited had movements
- does the sound go loud enough for deaf people

Any software updates can be transferred using a flash drive so that shouldn't be a problem. As others have said, pre-installed free tv channels received via a standard tv aerial are all that most elderly folk require and most importantly a simple, clear handset!

As noted, most TV's have smart features but you don't need to use them, and any software updates are usually to do with the smart features - it should work fine just on an aerial.

My recommendation would be that if she has room get her a reasonably big screen. My late grandma had always had quite small TV's as was usual back in the day, and when she needed a new one, we bought her a 40" or thereabouts, and she loved being able to see the bigger screen so much more easily.
