I currently drive a 118d sport and prior to that a civic type r. I'm looking to replace the 1 series with another hatchback but no idea what to go for. Budget is about 17K and needs to be petrol this time. I was looking at the Mercedes a class possibly 200 AMG. I don't want another BMW

I would be going for a Focus ST-3 or a golf GTI

I've never been a lover of the golf for some reason. The focus is an option, will need to have a look at one in the flesh.

Forgot to mention I'd prefer it to be within 3 years old and definitely 5 door. I'm also female if that changes the opinions

It has a hatch!?
The comment was a joke about the lack of specificity in the OPs request for suggestions.

Go for a last of the line Megane RS275 (the best drivers car in it's class) preferably a Lux with the Cup chassis & Recaros but the more than likely you'll find one with the first two & not the latter.

If you can stretch to it I'd go for this Trophy model:

Not sure if you want a new car?

An S3 (2010/1) is in budget.

Something that is comfortable to drive and a little bit of oomph behind it. Doesn't need to be type r speedy but don't want it to be sluggish. Would love some creature comforts within the car. Needs to be five door
