How long for State Pension adjustment after AVC?
Discussion
Morning Everyone, hope you're all well.
So I'm a little behind on my NI Contributions due to stepping back from work early. Contacted Dept for Work and Pensions, they've sent me my current state as far as how much I need to pay to catch up. That's not a problem.
Question is, when I go online, I can see what my forecast is for my weekly State Pension, does anyone know how long it takes to update with a new forecast after I've paid my arrears? Couple of weeks, months?
I'm going to pay online in order to have proof of payment rather than sending a cheque.
Many thanks for your time.
Regards, Simon.

When you use the term AVC do you actually mean paying gaps in your National Insurance record? (paying voluntary NI) If so then I just have gone through a similar procedure.
1) You need Government Gateway account register: http://www.gateway.gov.uk/
2) Go to https://www.gov.uk/check-national-insurance-record this will show you your record. Decide which years you wish to pay (click on view details - generally it is cheaper to pay the older years first, although you can only go back as far as 2006-7 (in the new tax year it might be 2007-8)
3) Go to https://www.gov.uk/pay-voluntary-class-3-national-... and choose how to pay
4) I paid by online banking. https://www.gov.uk/pay-voluntary-class-3-national-...
5) You will need an 18 digit Reference Number beginning with a 60. You have to phone HMRC to get this. The phone takes forever to be answered so if I were doing it again I would pay by cheque
6) To pay by cheque https://www.gov.uk/pay-voluntary-class-3-national-...
7) It will take a week or so to reach your account (instant if online)
8) Make sure that the money has reached your NI a/c by repeating step 2.
9) In the case of my online payment this showed purely as a lump sum so I had to phone them and allocate the payment to specific years, if you pay by post you will (as instructed) state which years you are paying
10) I would wait another few days before repeating step 8 to ensure correct allocation

Morning, yes sorry, I mean paying gaps in my NI. I know my shortfall and how much to bring me up to date (I have Gateway and checked). I've got a letter with the 18 digit Reference Number along with the sort code and account number I need to send the payment to. I know full well how difficult it is to get hold of them via phone, it took 7 weeks to just get this information!1) You need Government Gateway account register: http://www.gateway.gov.uk/

Thanks for talking, really helpful. I'll give your point 4 a go.

Alfaspecial - very good of you to give such a detailed response.
I have a related question....
I am not behind with ni contributions but want to retire early so I may be a few years short of the full stamp. Is it possible to pay additional years now? And if so how much do I need to pay? I like certainty so would like to see the full stamp on the ni website before retiring.

You're welcome.
Their phone system is frustrating. Which ever way you pay I would check that they have correctly allocated your payment.
I would also look at your record now (before payment) and print off a hard copy (although this might be contained in their letter)
When the payment has been made / allocated I would again print off a hard copy.
In this computer age printing off a hard copy might seem anachronistic but I wouldn't like to be tuning 67 (or whatever) and trying to argue your case with some 'computer says no' type......

Hi MikeStroud: I am not volunteering to be the PH expert on this subject!!!!! I have a related question....

I don't think you can pay in advance. You have to pay in arrears.
It rather depends on how many years you need to have paid NI for. In my case it's 36 with a retirement age of 67. There is no point paying any more than the minimum. Best get a state pension forecast https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/check-your-state-pe...
It might be the case that because you have enough NI years you don't need to make any more payments (or your second state pension takes your forecast to over £159.55 in which case there is no point paying anymore NI).
edit: PS The amount of Voluntary NI varies from year to year probably about £750 for this year but (say) 2009-10 was £689
