Something I thought I'd never do, i'm very close to buying a grp boat.

It needs a bit of work, i'll have to sway yacht enamel for flow coat.

Come on then, what is it?
My wooden Scorpion dinghy was enough to put me off the stuff for life!

I now (at the age of 47) have a two year old boy and I prefer to spend my time with him, rather than looking after a wooden boat. I also think, a fast planning boat isn't the right thing.

The boat in question is a bit of an oddity, but very similar to a Mitchel 31, big flat deep cockpit.

Only 20 more years and then your son can look after yout boat for you smile

I reckon some retro MTB-style cruisers in GRP would be interesting.

Oh god yeah! HSL102 with a super light strong build, loads of carbon and R glass and foam core. Infused. A pair of Cummins QSB6.7 550hp would shift if you made it light enough.

I’ve just given away my mirror dinghy - I couldn’t face varnishing it!

What are you looking at Ben?

After 18 months looking, a couple of false starts as budget got eroded by Citroen car sales (twice) and Mercedes, I think I have (at last) found a boat that is worth buying. Will get an offer in and accepted and then get back with a little more detail. There is currently some proper crap out there on the secondhand market at stupid prices. This is not totally stupid given the boat and overall condition, with a little negotiation on price I will be happy with the value.

Like your target, it is (quite) a few years old, plastic but very well built and heavy, seems to have been looked after to some extent (not to my standards so some proper testing, fixing of a few age related gelcoat nicks, properly deep shine and fettling to go) and located fairly close so I can bring her home on her own bum. It is fairly low spec but does have heating which in the UK should extend our season.

The missus loves it, so we are half way there - until the survey shows it is a dog and unbuyable and then she will get a moody on as there are really no suitable others on the market. Anyway, here’s hoping for a successful close and back home in a few weeks just ready for the weather to get amazing!

Exciting times. Can’t wait for the big bills to start rolling in... oh, hang on a sec, the memories are flooding back from my last boat wink. Anyone wanna buy a boat off me?

All the way form Isle of Wight to Ardlui on Loch Lomond. Boat was a right shed, needed a lot of work, I would have taken it on at the right price, but the seller and I we're a few grand apart. At his asking price, plus my transport cost, it would have been a £10k boat and it just wasn't.

Shame, I really liked it, perfect for us, very few of them.

Hope you get one sorted soon.

Well, this didn’t happen. Broker never got back to me. So, got onto another one. Better spec, a bit dearer. Guess what, I am all ready to pay the money, take the boat away and the broker could not get the owner to respond.

BUT... YEE HAH. Today I closed a deal on a little sportscruiser which I thought I had missed. It’s no superyacht, but is cared for, will do a good job and be highly suitable for what me and the missus plan to do with it.

The boat originally came on the market and went under offer immediately in early May whilst I was as in Valencia and unable to get onto it. Subsequent sad story means that the buyer could not complete, confirmed by third parties. Seemed to be a bucket list purchase which just could not happen due to health issues deteriorating very quickly.

So, it came back on last night, I called at lunchtime, went to see it at 3 today and had bought it by 5 after a sea trial and checking the missus (admiral) liked it. Contracts are being drawn up this weekend so should be heading home with her (hopefully early) next week - personally if I could bring her back Sunday I would love to as the sea state looks amazing to burn 90 gallons or so of fuel whilst “sea trialling”... all day smile

Message to half hearted boat sellers. Get off the pot or piss. You waste a lot of folks time and fuel travelling by not responding to post viewing enquiries. I and probably many other buyers don’t dick around, so basically you lost 2 pretty certain sales. In fact, I would still buy one of them at the full asking price it was that good.

Today was 2 hours start to finish to buy it when the owner truly wanted to sell it. Admittedly, there was a purchase survey from last week which helped, Vesselview on board for the sea trial, and the broker was very accommodating with my approach to getting it all done quickly.

“Contracts are being drawn up this weekend”

Never bought a boat before, but I assumed it would be like buying a car... hand over cash, do basic V5C equivalent paperwork and job done. Why do you need to draw up a contract to buy/sell a small boat?

There is no V5C as such. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have a bill of sale template that can be used.

At least SeeFive won't have an EmptyPontoon any more!

Indeed, it is more like buying a house in some ways with title issues and of course little things like making sure that the boat’s documentation purchase history supports the price you pay - or HMRC will be after you for the extra 20% VAT on top of your payment.

Great detective work Mr Huntsman smile. I am a bit quieter over there - still sussing out the grumps from the rest and biding my time to wind Oldgit up about the superb qualities of outdrives compared to shafts wink

So the plastic boat I nearly bought last April....

I went to see it, twas a right mess. I offered £4500, then £5500, but its gonna cost £2000 to get it to Isle of Wight. He wouldn't take less than £7500 on the day, so I got back in the hire car and back to the airport.

Boat stayed on the market until about June or so.

Its back on.

Hasn't moved. Nothing has been done.

There's a lot of overpriced tat out there these days, so many boats just sitting rotting and declining in value and racking up storage charges while the owners presumably delude themselves with google searches of boats in decent nick selling in weeks.

Yes, tis true. I believe for really good boats the market is very strong.

In this particular case, the storage is costing him nothing, so no urgency to sell.

I know of a yard on the Solent where one chap owns 7 yachts, smallish, all sub 30ft, they are all ashore, have been for many years, he never visits, not been seen for a couple of years, but the bill is always paid right away!

And I know of a Nelson 34, was ashore Langstone, chap bought it, owned 7 years, sold it, it NEVER moved, not even an inch. So basically he pissed away 7 years of storage in an MDL marina for a 34ft boat for nothing.

Go figure.

Must be nice to have tens of thousands you actively wish to get rid of in the least fun boat-related way possible.
