M57 Defender 110

Hello all, some of you may remember my other projects threads one of the most recent ones being about the m3 race cars, unfortunately due unforeseen circumstances, now who am I kidding - ran out of money and hadn't even started it LOL anyway moving on...
So I'll get straight into this...
The car is a 1986 ( I think) defender 110 with a 19j 2.5 TD engine in it... I picked it up from south wales about 3 weeks ago with the plan on putting a m57 engine in from the e46 330d/e39 530d.
I've always been a bimmer fan and know the engines pretty well. Don't get me wrong the standard 300tdi you can put in these are great, pretty bombproof but just lack torque... especially when towing - and since ive towed with a mapped 330d and loved the torque.. it made total sense.
So picking her up from the lad down in Newport
Back at the unit
So the next day got the 110 back into the unit, and what a struggle that was! the 110 did run but theres a problem with the gearbox so couldn't get any drive... had to make up a tow/push bar to mount to the discovery to get her in... much faff later we have a 110 in the air.
Was very nervous about getting her up in the air, one because they're a heavy ol beast and 2 because I was dreading what I was going to find...
about 6 hours later of using an angle grinder more than a socket set.... we got to this stage
So really there isn't much holding the chassis onto the body, its really very agriculturally simple its brilliant! Apart from the seized bolts...
End of day 1...
Start of the next day mean getting the chassis out the way and outside to give a look over...
A big thank you to a good friend of mine who came all the way back from Portugal to help me... I mean that's what I thought he came back for anyway.
Anyway the chassis
So as you can see pretty good! it needs a new rear crossmember, few chassis outriggers and a good clean up, waxoyl and paint!
'how bout that shell'
Pretty fubar'd
Oh yeah make a dolly for the shell first, that bit shoulda gone up there somewhere....
Anyway... The Strip down of the shell

Bulkhead
annnnd seat box
So Bulkhead... hmm rusty bulkhead.
As you can see from the above photos... pretty bad. I've never done something like this before, but I think I can save her, YRM do some brilliant repair panels so I reckon i'll go down that route...
This was a massive catchup, removing the seatbox was the last job I did and its in that current state at the moment... The next job is to order the panels and tackle the bulkhead... I really need to buy a portable media blaster for the project I think...

What are you doing for gearbox/transfer case? Did the X5 have the M57 in it?
Cheers all above (save me quoting individually)So I will be using a p38 bellhousing, p38 input shaft built into a r380 (300tdi) gearbox with HD bearings to handle the torquezzzz and 300tdi transfer box.

Is there an intended purpose for the defender. Or is it going to be made into something you daily?
To tow my racecar - Im going to crazy on the sound proofing and see if I can make her remotely comfortable for those longer journeys... if not itll just be a defender with a m57 in that I use occasionally Sorry all, no landy update at the moment - bit of workshop update though
Ive now gone full time running my own biz, eek so yeah things have been pushed back, but looking to get start again next week.

I bought some big steel beams...
I learnt how to use a forklift...
and skip a lot of work and were here...
Its a mezzanine floor, but without the floor...
anyway next weekend im picking up an e46 330d plus ive sourced a less rusty bulkhead, more updates soon!
Ive now gone full time running my own biz, eek so yeah things have been pushed back, but looking to get start again next week.
Further news, have some workshop updates
I bought some big steel beams...

and skip a lot of work and were here...
Its a mezzanine floor, but without the floor...
anyway next weekend im picking up an e46 330d plus ive sourced a less rusty bulkhead, more updates soon!

Christ where has the time gone!
anyway small updates...
the bulkhead that was on the defender was in a very bad state, and one locally popped up pretty cheap and in good condition... only needed footplates welding restoring...
so started chopping the rust out and cleaning up some edges to get some metal to weld too
drilling out spot welds after spot welds...
start making up the new panels...
Right so after that was done, another couple of weeks past till we could work on her again...
next job was rear chassis cross member!
First thing was getting the shell back on the chassis to mock the heights of the rear bolts...
oh forgot like a few stages of removing the old cross member... didn't get any photos of that but it involved a 9 inch grinder and a lot of mess!
anyway... clamps
tack and lift back up

annnnnd admire the only part of the chassis that rust hasn't got a hold of yet...
Thats currently caught up, I've been out and bought some doors and a new tailgate, to work between them all to fine a non rusty hybrid.
next up is to remove the m57 out the 330d and then start mocking up engine mounts etc
