Fish & Chips shops Leeds
Discussion
Sounds obvious I know but I think your best bet is to ask the one you intend to buy from. I know frying in dripping is (or was?) far more popular in the North of the country than the South but I wouldn't be surprised if the majority now use vegetable oil or frymax which is largely palm oil and very popular.

ta, all the googling i did came up with dripping! a least for the ones that are 'award winning'
Its definitely the preferred flavour up North, I rarely use it but ISTR its a much cleaner taste and less greasy than oil. Not much use if you are a vegetarian though
A case of ringing a few local chippies.
yeah guess so, ive emailed a few.
i dont mind it, the only one that i know of that uses round my way is the Aldeburgh Fish & Chip shop, and i find that quite nice. But no good for a veggie.
What did intrigue me on these websites menus for the 'award winning' ones that i googled (i find it easier to google that first then google the individuals) was the lack of fish variants. of the 5/6 i looked at 4 had haddock only i think. with the others offering cod too. No plaice, no Skate, no Rock Eel/Salmon, defo no cod roe. most in East Anglia you get 3-4. Some enlightened ones do Hake too.
had scallops kisted though. (yes i know these are potato scallops not the shellfish!)

Wetherby whaler at menston has a sign up saying you can request your food to be cooked in vegetable oil rather than beef dripping. Cracking fish and chips from there too, although thats with them cooked in dripping of course.
The Wetherby Whaler in Wakefield has one of the best batters I've ever had - so crispy.dazwalsh said:

missed this!ate at fox in menston one night, was ok. trying a bit too hard and lacking a bit of finesse for what they were trying to do but decent enough. good value too.
passed the wensleydale creamery too as the weather, well yorks CCC running scared, prevented the main reason i had to go up, and it had a surprisingly cheap, tasty restaurant for lunch. the place it self was weird lines of people queuing up for help yourself free samples of the cheese all out of the same bowl. yuck

To be honest and being a leeds lad, most good chippies use beef dripping , its usualy the chinese places and kebab places that use oil . cannot think of a decent one that uses oil though for fush and chips. if its a gluten thing or coeliac my local midgleys on bramley town street do the option for those dietry requirments and are bloody good too.
