Hoping someone can help me.

I have an e46 with a flat battery. I cannot get jump leads to it, and need to get the battery out to charge it, but cannot figure out how to get the boot open to get to that battery.

Is there a mechanical manual release somewhere?

If it's a saloon, coupe or cabrio. the key can be used to unlatch it. Turn anti clockwise. If it's a compact or touring, connect a battery to the posts under the bonnet to power the car. Then open the boot. I think there's an emergency release. There's a little panel that can be removed and then the boot can be unlatched.

I was going to say, my coupe had a manual lock on the boot lid, else as said don't forget about the jump posts under the bonnet.

You can open the bonnet and use the jumping points there.

This, you can charge the battery from these also.

So how do you open the bonnet? If the battery is dead I presume that the cabin doors can not be unlocked either and you need to get in there to pull the bonnet handle.

He may need to crawl under the car and connect jump leads to the starter.

Put the key in the door lock and turn it.

Where do I connect charging leads to? There is a. +ve terminal, but no -ve. Do I just connect to a bolt through bodywork?
Don't want to kill electrics.

5 Minutes on Google brings this up:

You don't have to use the dedicated negative terminal however. In my case I used one of the strut brace bolts which in turn could be one of the 3 top mount bolts if any of them are exposed:

You can make out the factory negative post as well as just seeing where I've attached it to the strut brace.
