E46 318 Engine Whine
Discussion
Hi All,
I'm wondering would anybody have an idea where to pinpoint a whining sound (increases with engine RPM). Either somebody has broken into it and installed a Supercharger, or I'm going to have to get something replaced.
Engine is the N46 in an '05 E46 318ci. Car runs fine, no particular grumbles just an odd whining sound which I think originally manifested as a faint whistle.
Any pointers to common sources are greatly appreciated!

Pin-pointing noises is just a matter of common sense really, listen inside/outside/windows open/bonnet up/wheels jacked/in gear etc until you find a likely culprit.
Likely candidates are many but include wheel bearings, diff bearings, drive shaft joints, brake discs, drive belts, engine bearings, gearbox bearings, and many many others.

Thanks for that, I've managed to source it to the front of the engine - pulleys/alternator area. Willing to bet it's a dodgy pulley.Likely candidates are many but include wheel bearings, diff bearings, drive shaft joints, brake discs, drive belts, engine bearings, gearbox bearings, and many many others.
Sorry, my mind missed the word engine in the title.
One thing that you can do to try to narrow it down further is (this sounds daft but both work very well) use a length of vacuum hose with one end stuck in your ear & use the other to help you "listen in specific areas" to narrow down the point it is coming from. Of course a mechanics stethoscope can help this too.
Another one if it is belt/pulley related is to get a hand sprayer (the garden/flower type) and with it on a fine jet spray it at different areas to wet them & see if the sound changes. DO NOT USE ANYTHING OTHER THAN WATER! The finer the jet & the more accurately you use it, the better will be your diagnosis.
