Hi all, sister in law runs a CR-V 2007 newer shape 2.2 cdti, around 130k Miles.

The car drives fine, nothing seems wrong with it apart from when it’s idling/neutral and you hear a rattly juddery noise coming from the clutch, I say clutch because the clutch pedal is vibrating. I just took it out to see exactly what’s wrong to try and explain here however that’s the only thing. All the gears work fine, it’s got power, it’s smooth, running fine, the clutch doesn’t slip either. My brother said the clutch pedal seized for a few minutes when approaching a junction on a hill.

I don’t know much about the mechanical aspect of cars so I presume it’s either the flywheel or clutch. Definitely not the gearbox as all ratios work fine an changes gear fine. My brother took it to a mechanic, company called formula one and quoted him 855 plus VAT to take out the gearbox and diagnose the problem, guy didn’t even come outside and look, sat there in the office. He took it to the place down the road and quoted 1100.

Anybody have any idea of what this may be? We don’t know any mechanics, let alone trust one. If anybody can reccomend an honest decent mechanic would be great, not a rude man sitting behind a desk giving figures to make you go away to make his job easier. I’m in the surrey area!

Thanks

It'll likely be a Dual Mass Flywheel (expensive bits of kit unfortunately), most cars have some sort of DMF delete option which could be cheaper but the cost sounds feasible to replace the DMF.

And clutch at the same time, that is.

It all points to a faulty duel mass flywheel, so it will be gearbox out and a new clutch and DMF. There is a lot of labour involved so it will be an expensive job. Do some research, try and find a small independent garage who specializes in Japanese cars.
Do not be tempted in "cheepo Ebay parts" OR a solid flywheel conversion. That Honda engine is designed around a DMF so make sure quality O/E parts are used.

Thanks all, the car does have high mileage so it’s expected, still, I don’t think anybody would want to see a £1000 bill.

I’ll look out for indie mechanics who work from Home, I had a cambelt replacement done on my IS200 from an ex Toyota mechanic at his house and I felt much more comfortable than handing it to an apprentice in a big garage with loads of cars and nobody doing anything!

It's a bit of a big heavy job for somebody without a car lift.

£650 for flywheel, clutch and bolts from euro car parts.

Are all CRVs 4wd? Might get labour as low as £200 depending on whether it's a cash job or not.
