Apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but I drove an excellent 4WD Golf in Switzerland some years ago, my local main dealer has never heard of one, were they ever sold in the UK ?

You could get a V5/V6 4Motion on the Mk4, and a 2.0tdi 4Motion in the mk5 I think

Long before the 4motions, there was also the Golf Rallye - a wide bodied 4wd mk2 Golf.

Thanks, but it just looked like an ordinary Golf, I've tried contacting the car hire companies at Geneva airport but unsurprisingly they don't keep records from over ten years ago !
I also spotted on the same trip, a very cool-looking Audi A2 in bright red with red alloys and red/black upholstery, which looked like a production model (not customised) but that also seems to have been an early 2000's European (non-UK) spec vehicle.

There was a "normal" (as in non-Country) Golf Syncro too:

Apologies for German link, it gives you the idea.

Thanks all for jogging my memory. Yes, that's undoubtedly it, which I Googled and also got the specs from Parkers. We used to make annual trips to Switzerland, and on that occasion the rental Golf whizzed us up to Gstaad (sorry to place-drop...) in great style, nicely built, loads of room and as sure-footed as you can imagine. In my next life I plan to buy one new and keep it in the garage of the (of course much larger) house and use it for winter sports hols.....cool
