Quick one. GF is currently out of the country. Asked me to pay £2k cash into her account which is with RBS using sort code and account number.
Have done this previously no issues.

Bank said not going to happen, legislation prevents me from doing so without her bank card and/or paying in book ( no idea where this is she uses her card which is with her).

Is this a new ruling I have missed or have I just got a hitler on the counter of the branch?
I don't want to put cash into my account if possible for tax return reasons etc.

You might need to explain that comment.

Seriously?

To paraphrase.

The clerk won't let me pay into another account in case I'm doing something illegal.

I don't understand why as I'm only doing it illegal reasons.

Just pay her £2000 from your account, and then pay the cash back into your bank account.

Effectively, you've lent your girlfriend £2k, and she's paid you back in cash. .How can that be an issue with your tax return?

Don't see the problem?

This seems to vary from one bank/branch to another. I run a wedding industry business and ask for payment in advance by bacs or cheque. Quite often clients ask to pay on the day in cash. I tell them no, but suggest that they pay the cash into our account over the counter. Recently some banks haven't let them but others have. Very odd.

Are you doing this at the branch where her account is held, or at least the one she usually uses?

Years ago (so this isn't a new thing) I remember a friend of my wife's who works in a bank saying it got flagged up if someone tried to pay cash into an account from a different location to normal.

It does make me laugh.

A few weeks ago I was in my local branch (sh*t hole of an area) and at the counter was a guy who wanted to withdraw cash but had no card or ID. Then once the cash was out he asked to change his address.. the person behind the counter had no problem with this, I saw no exchange of ID they just asked for his date of birth and existing address etc!!

Then as soon as the change of ID was done he asked to order a new card!!! Now to me if that's not alarm bells then I don't know what is??
