What has happened to pistonheads?
Discussion
Joined pistonheads in 2003 when I was looking for advice on my first TVR and the help I got was fantastic, stayed on here over the years still asking for advice on cars up until my last purchase of a R8 everyone again very helpful but I look on general gassing, it seems that the average person is no longer a pistonhead, bad parking thread 78 pages who doesn’t want to get there pride and joy damaged, yes I am lucky to be able to buy a R8 but I park it so it won’t get damaged by the average Tesco shopper, another thread where people were taking the p** out of someone’s personal plate when he had asked a genuine question and don’t get me started on speeding, plod and the law, we all say things were better in our youth but I joined this forum when I was forty (hardly my youth) but it was 99% car enthusiasts then and a few trolls how things have changed and yes I know I am going to get flamed with my comments.
Thank you for all your help fellow enthusiasts over the years think it is now time to say goodbye

I think you’re on to something here, it was definitely better in the old days, as was everything.
Perhaps someone should set up a sub forum for the PH old timers to reminisce - we could turn the brightness down a bit, or make it all black and white for the really old members, as the internet was in their day.

OP has a point. Every time I click on "What's New", I notice well over half of all threads being commented on have nothing whatsoever to do with cars or motoring. This forum has sections for everything under the sun. Houses, DIY, Legal arguments, relationship issues, gardening, travel, news and politics, pictures of what we had for dinner and just about everything else.
The reason why is quite simple: the forum owners (last time I heard I think it was Haymarket) can charge more for advertising space based on the amount of internet traffic through the site. Get more people on here, and they can charge more; simple as that.
Well, what good has all this money done? It certainly hasn't made the forum any better. I think it's about time the site was split in two. Keep all the car related threads, and call that Pistonheads. Move all the other threads on to another site, and call that Everythingelseheads!
I think all the advertising revenue in the world won't save this site from imploding if we don't get back to its original DNA. This site was set up as a motoring forum, and I wanna see more quality and less quantity.
OP, well done for having the guts to say what a lot of us have been thinking for a while now.

The forum's dying anyway and Haymarket has pulled almost all financial support. The reason why is quite simple: the forum owners (last time I heard I think it was Haymarket) can charge more for advertising space based on the amount of internet traffic through the site. I hope that the OP decides to stay -- and that he enjoys the occasional laugh at our expense.
Somebody with long-term "organisational memory" needs to take the p*** when we deserve it! It's an intergenerational tradition

One reason why things are different today: There are many sources of motoring news and community, including sources that are not hosted in the UK. In the past, there were fewer places to gather, online. And in the past, the "in real life" meetups were not so fully enabled or fortified by online channels and social media.
