A bit like cutting your own heart out, really. One of the world's most underrated guitarists.
I'd love to know what went on behind the scenes.

Money.

I'll guess that LB has some sort of veto over any FM tour and the only way to get that final tour/last big money maker in has been to part ways.

I would never say he was one the 'most underrated' guitarists. No way would I say that. Having been there at the beginning and watched the 'then' master Green (is God, not Clapton) and the brilliant vibrato guitarist Danny Kirwan, I fell immediately for finger-plucking Buckingham (and Nicks) when they joined and the group went into universal stardom, and both Green and Kirwan fell to the evil of drugs (plus alcohol in the case of Kirwan).

There has been episodes in the Fleetwood Mac line up many times. Buckingham has had disagreements before with the band (when bands have this longevity, it's bound to happen). I love his playing, but something just made me sit up. The fact that a, if not the, most underrated guitarist in the world may be joining them. Mike Campbell (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers). He leapt to my number one guitarist a few years back. I first watched TP&TH in 1980 in Oxford, and loved them ever since. Last saw them at Hyde Park last year. I never realised it would be the last time. I have wondered since TP died what would happen to the band. I have seen Fleetwood Mac in all its incarnations over the decades, and with Mike joining I will definitely be after tickets should they come back to the UK again. Lyndsey will continue, of that I have no doubt. I first saw him when he reminded me of Green with all that long hair and beard - I even looked like that at that point in time. Today, of course, the hair is almost gone, as is mine too!, Greenie is lost but not forgotten, Kirwan is still out there in a hostel, but give me Mike Campbell over all of them, long standing and brilliant guitarist. No. 1 in my book.

My favourite Bucks is this, when I first saw him in the band, with long hair and beard (for those who only know him in more recent times.

Just thought of something with the beards and long hair. Mike Campbell has the beard and long hair so much later in a guitarist's life - he's now 68 (snap!) yet when I first saw them at the Poly in Oxford he was the thin clean-shaven bushy-haired 30-year-old.

I was at the front that evening. Great set. Hooked immediately!

I'd have gone to see Fleetwood Mac again anyway if they returned here. Now I can't f. wait! IF the new line-up turns out to be correct.

Mike more recently. 12 mins if you can watch and love guitar playing. Tom and Mike just bounced off each other.

I've seen Lyndsey Buckingham play with FM a few times, insanely good player.

Don't know how interesting the band would be without him.

I see them play in the late 80s without him, replaced with a couple of guitarists.
I think LB could be hard work and although he is responsible for some of Fleetwood Mac's finest tunes he is also responsible for some very un-Fleetwod Mac type tunes that just didn't really fit on a Fleetwood Mac album, Tusk the LB penned tune being the first single from the album of the same name is a classic case of this and makes me wonder if he was giving out the orders on this album. Definitely not a good track to promote the album tbh especially as most people were expecting/hoping for a Rumours pt2 taster.

I can't think of many mega bands that have had as turbulent history as Fleetwood Mac.

They will survive.

Lindsey Buckingham and Mike Campbell are two of my favourite guitar players. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were ( frown ) my favourite bands and Fleetwood Mac are definately in my top five. I’m lucky to have seen the Heartbreakers six times including Hyde Park and also saw Fleetwood Mac in 2010. I got tickets to a Lindsey Buckingham solo UK tour a few years back but he cancelled due to his guitarist injuring his back. Greatest tour that never was!

Will I see the Mac with Mike Campbell and Neil Finn? Hell yes! Do I think it’s the right decision for Fleetwood Mac as a band? No.

Mike Campbell is an underrated genius and it pains me to think that he will be compared to Lindsey Buckingham. They have two very different types of playing styles and although Mike Campbell will probably see himself as a hired gun in this case I think the fans and press will be less sympathetic. Let’s not forget when Lindsey left last time frown

What makes you think that Mike Campbell is underrated? You and I think Mike Campbell is amongst the worlds best guitarists, many others think Mike Campbell is one of the best, I couldn't possibly rate Mike Campbell as the best gutarist as there are many best guitarists
I have to disagree with you, Mike Campbell isn't underrated, perhaps you use the word underrated rather than the words "not as well known"
By the way, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers are one of my favourite bands and Tom Petty dying still hasn't fully sunk in

You’ll go a long way to find a band the equal of FM, maybe The Allman Brothers years ago.
I have a close friend in NYC who’s an absolute ringer for Stevie Nicks, except a tad shorter at 1.50 metres, and 10 years younger.
She flew down to be a witness when I married in Florida 24 years back.
As we were waiting to go in the marriage room in the Hernando County Courthouse, a woman was looking hard at her, then fished in her bag for a pen.
Régina said, “I’m not her, really, I’m not.”
I don’t think the woman believed her.

Snap!

And didn't you really mean 'Oh my my, oh hell yes!'

I think Mike will do just fine. Fans are fans. The press are a different matter. However, I see 'Uncut' mags have screwed up, the latest issue in their 'Ultimate Music Guide' is ...Fleetwood Mac. Just released the 'deluxe expanded' issue (at a whopping £10.99). I popped into newsagents to give it a look. It's only up to Buckingham/McVie and their recent adventure. A week is a long time when something goes to press. LOL. I bet they are preparing another new 'deluxe expanded' issue right now!

I don't know about Neil Finn, but as said previously I've gone from Green through many to Campbell. I think he will surprise, not just because he is so good, but Mick Fleetwood is no fool, he's seen and been through everything. He knows talent.

One of my enduring memories of Mick Fleetwood was at a Spring Music Festival held on Bath City football ground in late Spring 1970 just before the tremendous Isle of Wight Festival in August. The Bath do was a quid (sorry a one pound note, or 24 shillings on the door!) and Isle of Wight just three pound notes for several days!

At Bath (Peter Green era, near his leaving them) - I'd have gone anywhere to see the Peter Green and Danny Kirwan play, and did! This event was when promoters pulled the power - I grant you it was dark and very late and the Mac were top billing and last on. They played some great stuff, much from the album Then Play On, but included even Albatross which echoed into the night. I can't remember what Greenie yelled when the power went off, but it was something unkind as obviously he couldn't play on although to be fair they had played quite a set.
Didn't stop Mick though, he carried on drumming on his own, for what seemed like ages with others banging things on stage! hehe

It was also another first for me with other new found loves: Wishbone Ash were on and I was awe struck by them - guitars were always my thing. This was before their first self penned nam album. Although not on the prog, Chicken Shack appeared and were great too. Stan Webb, another great guitarist. Great times. Amazing to think we are heading towards 50 years on, and regardless of line up, those incredible guitar sounds keep going.

Should add too, not well known about Lyndsey Buckingham is that he used to suffer from epilepsy - pretty sure he doesn't now. I remember reading at one point or more he had a seizure before going on to play.

Sorry, I missed your post. What makes me think Mike is underrated? Well, the uninitiated (not you) always look towards things like RollingStone.com for things like their '100 Greatest Guitarists' picked by a panel of 'experts' and 'top' guitarists.

I would place Mike top simply as he's my favourite and most consistent for someone whose been playing 40 years+, you wouldn't. That's fair enough.
And yes, I do mean 'underrated' because if he's not, then surely experts in the field would place him, obviously not top, nor in the top 10. Even someone as bias as me can appreciate that, but surely he would be placed somewhere highish?

Guess where they placed him?
Top 20, top 30, top 40, top 50, top 60, no?
Not even in the top 70.
Only just in the top 80, at number 79.
So yeah, on that basis, he's underrated imo. And he's just joined probably the most successful band in the world!

But then, to turn 'experts' assessments on their heads, guess who they have at No. 100?

One ...yeah, you've guessed it... Lyndsey Buckingham!

So to end, he (Mike) is my favourite of all my favourites. And yeah, you're right. He is not as well-known. I think that is about to change big-time. I bet we can agree on that! hehebeer

I'd still go to see them but it won't be the same.

Some good views on this thread, especially considering guitarists but as much as I love MC it isn't the guitar playing I'll miss-it's LB's voice.

Yeah, I think the guitar playing is replaceable - but the history/emotion/singing that Buckingham has will be missed.

Also Neil Finn as well as MC.

The world is chock full of underrated guitarists.

Steuart Smith was good enough for The Eagles and could probably do a FM tour in his sleep.

Or 'Big Love'.

For me, Buckingham, Nicks and Christine McVie are Fleetwood Mac. Remove any of those three and I wouldn't get out of bed to see them.
