I've just started using this firefox malarky as everyone seems to recommend it...

However, its as slow as a slow thing wih a special reason to be slow on national slow day...

Is this the case? Is it slower than IE or is my faithfull laptop ... Shite.

there are ways to speed it up but it shouldn't be that slow to start with

do a search for firefox when it's up and running again

goes something like this

This tweak will make it run much faster:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.
(some may say this value is a bit high)

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

I found firefox to be slower than opera, and that's after tinkering deep into the settings.

Websites that have been optimised for IE at the expense of standards compliance may well be faster under IE, but on the whole Firefox is faster and less lardy than IE in my experience.

Thats it - the last of my home PC's has gone Firefox now. One IE web hack too many and IE is resigned to Windows update only..... crappy flippin' hunk of rubbish...

Firefox is the way forward...

if everyone does this, the site you're accessing ends up using a lot more bandwidth

Eh? How does that work then? Sure it'll saturate their pipe faster, but one page impression is the same amount of data whether you get it sequentially or in parallel.

sorry, not really bandwidth, but just slowing down servers with so many requests, no need for more than 3

Is it actually more secure though? Im under the impression that the fact that it is less liable to attack is because, at the moment its market saturation means that spyware, viri etc havent been designed for it. Give it time. A phishing exploit has already been found.

But it's fixed a hell of a lot faster than IE.

And should you wish to, you can check the code for bugs....

I have finally found the problem seam that zonealarm set the privacy on firefox which prevents the java scripts from functioning properly. The only way I found this was by turning off "turn on privacy for this program" in the options of zonealarm. right click on firefox in zonealrm programs then options then remove the tick from "turn on privacy for this program" then all works properly. this is a problem also with IE which I eventualy found reference to at zonealarms forum after considable shagging about.

hope this helps others
