(1) Gov: no to restrictive covenant legislation (2) Byee!

The Government had been muttering about legislating to curb restrictive covenants. It has now decided not to do so.
Here's a link to one of my distinguished colleagues in my old chambers welcoming this decision. As I am now ceasing to make money from restrictive covenant litigation (see below), I can and do disagree with him, and express the view (in fact I have said this for years) that restrictive covenants are too widely used, too readily upheld*, and ought to be rarer.

In other news, I am jacking in employment law. I have taken a new gig with an offshore law firm and will be doing other stuff from now on. Not only will I be ceasing to keep up with UK employment law, but because I have given up self employed status (after 31 years in the same chambers, yikes) and joined a global outfit, my social media witterings will have to be dialled down a bit, and so I won't be able to be such a gobby knobhead here and elsewhere as has been my wont. All cheer!
Thus I can say so long and thanks for all the fish. I may still post a bit about disgusting old cars, in the disgusting old car sections, and may venture the odd shouty and disrespectful legal opinion in S,P&L, but I'm ouddahere.
*Bloke in pub opinion is always "those covenants are never enforced". Bloke in pub is, as he usually is about everything, plain wrong.

Have never had a huge problem with known understood and compensated for restrictive covenants, but given nobody ever actually reads any contracts, suppose that I am pretty much on my own there

Cheers! BVI, not Cayman. The yachts there are either modern plastic sailors, or superyacht gin palaces belonging* to the oligarchs whom I will be representing. Any cool wooden ones were sunk by the hurricane, alas. I am toying with the idea of importing something stupid to drive on the rocky roads, but short term will buy a 2000 dollar Rav 4 or cheap jeep with knackered springs and questionable aircon.
* For the record, it is denied that Mr Oligarchski has anything to do with the Motor Yacht Titiania . The said vessel is understood to be owned (allegedly) by a discreet corporate entity that has no connection with Mr Oligarchski.

I did read the origin/rule of law book (actual title forgotten) you recommended and have used the knowledge to pass myself off as more intelligent than I am a few times now. Not remembering the title is a better reflection of my intelligence.

I read The Rule of Law and First Steps in The Law from a post you made in the Parking Eye thread (no idea why I read that thread as it was pulling teeth). Enjoyable and readable books to the non-legal person that I am.
If you can recommend any others to an interested reader of the law but who is not legally qualified in any way, before you depart, I would be most grateful.
