2012/2013 VW Touareg 3.0 TDI
Discussion
Hi all,
We really need to change the car this year, and I'm limited a bit due to the need to tow a large twin axle caravan.
We've had an A6 3.0 Avant for the last 6 years, but it's getting on now and we'll be approaching the 125k mile mark soon.
A 2012/2013 Touareg is looking like a good option.
3500kg tow limit, 140kg tow ball weight, plenty of power and cheaper than the Discovery 4 alternatives!
Any known issues/pitfalls that I need to know about when looking?
Any experience?
Many thanks!
Ross

We have a 2012.
Has been very reliable and actually quite enjoyable to drive; handles well for a 4x4 and quite quick on occasions in sport mode.
Feels very well built and tows easily. I have towed a large 4 berth single axle caravan and a twin axle car trailer/ car with it easily.
The only issue that we have had with it was with the electric panoramic sun roof which started to play up - very jerky and would sometimes stick partially open. Had it fixed under warranty (with about 3 days left!!!) or else it would have been very expensive. Apparently the "worm gears" get crudded up and stick. A known problem, apparently, same on Passats, I think.
Ours has the air suspension and I would recommend this for towing as self levels. Also makes hooking up and disengaging a doddle.
Recommended.

Excellent, many thanks all.
Looks like it's highly likely to be our next car. I think it offers very good value for something with 3500kg towing limit and decent build quality.
Our car has adaptive air suspension and it is very good indeed for towing, although a PITA if/when the air bags split!!
