E-mails? How are they stored? Outlook data file (eg PST)? Is this backup of an individual laptop/PC or an e-mail server?

You can have 50GB of space with Microsoft OneDrive for £1.99/month but it might no be the right solution?

I use Google Drive... few quid a month. Microsoft offer similar, as stated. Both very good.

I also use Hightail.com for storage and collaboration.

I'm interested in this, too.

We currently use Dropbox. We have people working collaboratively at several locations, and we need LOTS of storage space (photos, CAD files and graphics). Dorpbox works well for the collaborative working, and offers us unlimited storage, but it's not cheap (£66 per month for 5 licences).

I've been toying with the idea of buying a MyCloud server instead something like >this<. Does anyone have experience of these? Reviews are a bit mixed...

If you let me know your requirements, I will let you know options and if it will do what you need / how to do it.

One of the businesses I work with had this issue and we ended up moving to Office 365 Business. It's 10 quid a user per month, but you get the full suite of Microsoft products and a truckload of storage.

Their Teams product works particularly well for us

Basically, something that works like dropbox (ie. each user sees it as another drive on their machine, with files being continuously synchronised between being held on local computers and on the cloud server; files 'locked' to read-only if someone else has them open). At least 1TB of file space, continuously mirrored for backup (so 2TB total). Capability to log in for web access from any device, over the internet (without content being held locally, for access from tables and other devices with limited memory.

You'll gather that I'm not an IT person, so it will need to be fairly simple, reliable and idiot-proof!

...And cost low enough for it to pay for itself reasonably quickly, versus the £66/month we're paying to Dropbox at present (to be fair, Dropbox works well for us... just that £66 a month feels fairly expensive to me, when various companies are offering more limited cloud storage for free).

So backing up the server and PCs? Or just the server? What software does the server run if it's handling e-mails?

If it's just basic file backup, then CrashPlan for Small Business is 10 USD per device per month

https://www.crashplan.com/en-us/business/features/

You can backup locally to a USB disk (handy for quick restores) and online (so good for DR scenarios)

Requirement is too vague but needless to say Office 365 should probably be considered if you're running your own server for 6 users.

Not experienced that exact model but I would say the MyCloud devices are generally very easy to use and administer (easier than Synology IMO) but just avoid the very low-spec consumer models as they are a touch slow!

Just get GSuite, move all your files, and move everyone's email on to gmail.

DiskStation DS918+

Many different ways to achieve what you want with that unit or 2 for High Availability, only concern would be if you can set up to be reliable+secure and do things the best way, also your internet connection upload speed for remote working - depending on file sizes you have.

Synology have nice apps for mobile use, easy 2FA as well.

Good file versioning, easy to use backup features and their own cloud backup, easy to set up folder encryption, easily to add ssl certs for remote connections etc.

They are great things if you spend a small amount of time to learn the features available and are easy to use and quickly respond to any issues with updates.

Have a play on a demo box https://www.synology.com/en-uk/dsm/live_demo

We went to 365 in a company of about 40 people. E-mail is less hassle than our IT guys running our own mail system and of course we now have webmail and can access e-mail on phones which was tricky on our old system.

We also now have office 365 so latest versions of everything, and the licence is to the individual so I can install it on my Pc at home too. One drive is also very useful, we share files with contractors on it and I keep some reference stuff on there so I can access form anywhere.

Makes a lot of sense for a small company IMO, but you do need to make sure all staff are aware of what they can and can't use if for.

Is that just Email or both email and general file storage? In any case the default choice for a small business these days is Microsoft Office 365 which is fairly simple and mostly reliable. If you email is on premises currently then you may like someone to manage your migration and discuss your options in detail - in which case I'm happy to point you in the direction of my employer as this is typical bread n butter stuff for us smile
