'Sports' products, is it just me?
Discussion
…Or is it all a ridiculous load of guff. Everything seems to have ‘sports’ tacked onto it as if this somehow makes things better. Cars are just the start, sports cars with sports seats (with sports stitching), sports suspension, sports wheels, sports bodywork, sports exhaust (or chavtastic fartcannnon to the rest of us), sports air refreshener etc. Then we have sports boats, sports jackets, sports watches, sports shoes, sports underpants, sports umbrellas, sports bars, sports drinks, sports chocolate, I even apparently have a sports shower for f
ks sake. The only unifying factor I can identify is that not one of these things is actually used to perform any kind of sport.
There’s a million other examples too, is it just me that thinks it’s ridiculous and are people actually swayed by such daftness?

"Sports" Utility Vehicle. Typically used on the school run for carrying kids and double parking on the yellow zigzags outside schools?
The sport might not be one which needs to be the fastest - it might be the sport of shooting, or horse box towing, or something along those lines... I bought a Mazda CX-9 'Sport' for the wife and kiddy stuff. (Pic as this is Pistonheads)

Turns out the 'Sport' trim is actually bottom of the range and it goes up from there using various other marketing driven phrases like 'Touring' and 'Grand Touring'.
You know something bad is happening when 'Sport' is the entry level.

A bit like the jaguar xf range, with the old range going from "luxury" as the entry level followed by "premium luxury" and "portfolio".

the "sport" badge might be appropriate for the basic item in the range, no kit, manual windows, gearbox etc would reduce weight and so may be more appropriate to take on a track day of hill climb, than the top of the range dripping with electrical doo dads and powered evertyhing - probably worth 5 seconds a lap.. porsche take this approach, but seem to charge more for the car with less (not saying a cx9 is a track day car btw)

They’ve buggered it up again. ‘S’ is the top of the range for XE, XF and F-Pace.
‘S’ Is bottom of the range for E-Pace.
F-Pace is the SUV variant of the XF and follows same naming convention; Prestige, R-Sports, Portfolio.
E-Pace is the smaller SUV with major designs cues from F-Type and naming convention from Land Rover; S, SE, HSE with additional R-Dynamic trim.
Major fail of the marketing department!
