Is there anyone that could give me an idea of what it would cost to sort out this bit of bubbling? If it helps, the car is a 2006 Jaguar XK. This area is the front of the passenger door. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Depends how good a job you want doing. It will cost more as it's metallic rather than flat paint.

I got front wings, doors, rear quarters and bootline done for £650 cash, but that was flat paint and isn't perfect.

I wonder if that could be SMART repaired as its only a small area? I'm not too familiar with SMART repairs (even though I've had two done myself previously)......... I'd enquire about SMART repairing it first as it would most likely be cheaper than a full repair.

Thats been previously repaired. Not necessarily for rust but the rust is coming from under a previous repair.

It could have possibly been damaged and the factory galvanised coating breached hence the rust.

Looks from the inside out though so will just re rust in no time, better off with a new door\wing if it’s a keeper, I Had a similar bit of rust on a previous car that I had repaired, it lasted barely 12 months then it was back

If you look closely, it looks like both panels have a bit of rust on them, not just the front of the door panel.

Thanks, everyone. This is a car I was considering buying, I think I would be better to wait for another one from the responses so far.

Is it rust? I thought these XK’s were Aluminium.

Iirc these suffered from poor paint adhesion causing aluminium corrosion.

^^^ Exactly this. This kind of paint bubbling is characteristic on early aluminium XKs and X350 XJs. Not seen it happen on the later post 09 cars so perhaps they've fixed the cause by now.

Low down in the corner of a panel like that you will probably get away with a Chips Away type repair for around £100, Higher up on window surrounds, and horizontal panels like bonnet, roof and bootlid will be harder to lose and probably require the panel to be painted.

The upside is that it doesn't tend to develop and spread as aggressively as corrosion on a steel car, so if you can live with it or if the car doesn't warrant spending the money then it's unlikely to hasten its death.

What century have you plucked £100 for a CA repair from?
