I'm sure this has come up before, but I'm finding it quite difficult to get consistent readings of oil level on the dipstick.
I've tried many methods:

- as per manual - engine off, 30 seconds, test (with and without rubber grommet on the dipstick) <-- horribly inconsistent
- cold with rubber grommet on the dipstick
- cold without rubber grommet on the dipstick
- leaving it in for a longer time vs. shorter time

With all these methods, I get readings of everything from minimum to overfull. It seems to me that this setup is very poorly designed and horribly inaccurate.

Any tips or suggestions to be sure I'm getting a correct reading?

Remove the 'O' ring at the top of the dipstick when you measure the level (replace when finished). Apply some bend in the dipstick as it can help to stop the oil being smeared as you pull it in and out.
