Was that the R4 prog with Vic Reeves (Jim Moir)?
Listed to it by chance coming back from Scotland a week or so ago.
I'm 65 in a couple of weeks, grew up listening to Beefheart.
To me he was a great blues/jazz/innovator, listen to some of his tracks, there are very early blues influences there.
He also did some total crap unfortunately but still listen to him on occasion. Lads at work just don't get it, they are all a few years younger.
For a little less avant guarde, try Country Joe (Macdonald) and the Fish. His "What are we fighting for" is a classic.

When I were a lad,int. sixties, went up to Isle of Mull where uncle had an art school, very hippy establishment and my enduring memory is of "Cameron" who used to sit on the Aga where his bum left bum imprints on the chrome lid, and where he listened to "Trout Mask Replica" whilst smoking joints. "The Blimp the Blimp, the Mothership"

Safe as Milk is a great album and I never tire of The Spotlight Kid.

Always thought TMR was a bit over rated or at least there were a few poorer tracks on it to pad it out to a double.

I've been a fan since Ice Cream for Crow came out, I didn't know about the earlier stuff then, I just thought it sounded wierd and interesting.
I went to see The Magic Band when they toured the UK 10 or so years ago, obviously without Don but Drumbo did a great job. I'm glad I made the effort it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
I still listen to TMR regularly 30 years after I bought it, I think it's a fantastic album even moreso with the stories of the barnpot recording techniques. But it isn't my favourite, that would have to be Doc at the Radar Station.
