Hey,

Having not been able to find much that ticks my lease box fancies (had Golf R, currently on Pug 208 GTI by P.S.), I'm debating on putting down some money on a car instead with the pitiful offers around at the moment. This ends in June, but I may end early having just hit my mileage.

I was originally looking at Clio 1*2's as they're cheap & pretty good (owned 1 for 4 years prior to above 2 cars), and then thought about estates so I came across Octavia VRS or BMW 320/330d and similar with that kind of space/power.

I've always liked the A5's, and the noise on the 3.0 TDI is something else, so figured I'd start looking. They're a bit more than the original £1500 budget, and then that increased to £5k for barges I looked at, but is there a reason I shouldn't spend a bit more and go for one?

So hence this thread, I've looked around so far, but not really finding that much - are there many common issues to watch out for? Am I mad even considering one with my other suggestions? I like the idea of space, performance, but matched with a decent mpg and comfort when I need it, I do around 12-13k miles a year.

Thanks,

Matt

I own a facelift B8. Great balance between performance and economy for those who do more than the average miles if you ask me.

I get 40mpg on most drives outside of town, and for real world driving you'll keep up with most other cars (should you want to).

My brother has a facelift 2012 3.0TDI A5 as well. As ZX said I would also consider the 2.7. It won't do as good MPG but is just as refined - went in a 2007 A6 yesterday with the 2.7TDI and was very impressed compared to my dads A8 3.0 - almost at the same refinement levels. It had done 192k miles as well so just broken in biggrin

Try and look for MMI high (the standard system is pretty naff), xenon lights and otherwise there aren't really much essentials - maybe heated seats

Thanks guys - all useful info! smile

I think I have my heart set on the 3.0 for sure, just a case of finding one in the right price range and options.

There's so many options, and so many I want, finding the right one in my budget is going to take a while I think!

I've had an 09 3.0 for 18 months now going from 86k to 106k now.

Been pretty reliable only having had the window cable fail which I think is quite common (about £400 to sort) Servicing is ok price wise I use Quattrotech in St Ives for servicing etc. Oh and mine now randomly won't open the drivers door from the remote so you have to use the key to open.

Mine has the 20 inch wheels which makes tyres really expensive (£230 each) and they don't last that long ~ 12k miles. It also seems to be quite susceptible to the alignment getting knocked out by potholes which I assume isn't helped by the low profile tyres.

Mine is pretty fully loaded with the updated MMI (sd cards etc rather than the multi disk changer). Nice comfy place to be on long run. I also think that it is a good looking car with pretty good performance although I only seem to get ~35 mpg although I do tend to use the performance slightly more than perhaps I should.

Any questions then give me a shout

The 3.0 TDI was manual only until late 08 Plates. If you wanted an auto that is.

My old man has got a 3.0 a4 avant. Me and my brother recently took it to Andorra on a ski trip roughly 2000 mile round trip. 85mph cruise in France. Loaded four up and lots of gear. I think we averaged about 43mpg which I thought was very good
