What first car should you get? Here to help.

Stuck on what first car to buy?
Are you are worried it might break and cost you loads of money within 3 months of buying?
REALLY don't want a black box but for under £1,500 you can't find any?
I'm here to do the research for you and as a matter of fact, already have!
Currently I'm learning to drive myself, I'm only 17 with a low paying part-time job but have saved enough in order to buy a half-decent first car. My whole childhood has been based around cars so I've had no choice but to learn a lot!
The insurance is also based on an annual mileage of 6000. For those that are unaware, the 'excess' on your insurance is essentially the amount you'd pay towards when you claim on your insurance. For example if I had a crash and had £300 excess and it was a £700 repair, I'd pay £300 but my insurance company would pay £400. Since near enough every insurance company these days loves their profits they will ensure you have a compulsory amount. I will mark these with markings. * for £0 - £150. ** for £200 - £350. *** for £400 - £550. !!! for £600+
- Let's start off with a budget of £500 for the car and £1000 for the insurance.
Hyundai Getz
Working down the list of most reliable car brands from 2000 I have found a Hyundai(3rd) Getz.
- Between 2003 - 2006
- 1.3 Petrol (There is also a 1.1 and a 1.4)
- Averages 46 mpg
- Between £350 - £500
The cheapest insurance I have found on this car from a typical teenager's lifestyle and living quarters is £999.99*** with a black box. How perfect!
Ford KA
Working down the list of most reliable car brands from 2000 I have found a Ford(9th) KA.
- Between 1997 - 2005
- 1.3 Petrol
- Averages 42 mpg
- Between £200 - £500
The cheapest insurance I have found on this car from a typical teenager's lifestyle and living quarters is £875.99*** with a black box.
These 2 cars are the only 2 out of those 10 brands that are within this budget at the time of this post.
Moving on to what my budget is which I'm sure many are relate-able to.
- The budget of the car is £1500 and the insurance budget is about £1300.
This price range I have done and excessive amount of research into so instead of giving you the options of loads I feel I'd rather give you the result I've come to.
The cars I was looking at first were a 1.4 Petrol 2006- Honda Civic, 1.3 Petrol 2005- Suzuki Swift,1.2 Petrol 2008- Hyundai i20, 1.3 Petrol 2007- Mitsubishi Colt and a 1.3 Petrol 2007- Mazda 2.
Even though all these cars were well within what I wanted there was on problem, BLACK BOXES. But don't get me wrong if you don't care about black boxes then here are some insurance quotes.
Honda Civic (2007) - £1,293.11***
Suzuki Swift (2008) - £1,118.00***
Hyundai i20 (2009) - £1,065.99***
Mitsubishi Colt (2009) £1,132.00***
Mazda 2 (2008) £975.99***
For those of you that really don't want a black box but are kind of feeling as if you may have to deal with one I have a solution, a car, actually.
...or should I say three?
We have rather the Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107 or the Citroen C1!
The main differences between these are so little you can laugh about it.
The front end, the badges and the lights are different, THAT'S IT.
However there are a couple more differences, the price of each car and insurance of each car.
Now I was settled on the Toyota Aygo, as in about to go buy it but all of a sudden the insurance price bumped up and I wasn't too keen anymore. BUT looking at the Peugeot gave me hope until I saw the insurance price of that and that kind of sent me away. So I thought I may as well try the Citroen, it might be lower I had no idea. so with a heavy face and no motivation I slowly got my insurance quote and well...let's say this much. WHAT THE $&%£!!!
I'll just give you the list of the three insurance prices; without black boxes.
Toyota Aygo (2007) - £1,372.00**
Peugeot 107 (2007) - £1,584.80**
Citroen C1 (2007) - £995.68**
Yes you aren't just seeing this, a 17 year old MALE can get a car for under £1,500 with insurance for less than £1000 AND NO BLACK BOX.
I've seen with friends that females tend to have cheaper insurances for some reason.
I am also aware Citroen is not on the top 10 reliability list however Toyota is, and the majority of the Citroen C1 is the Toyota Aygo.
But anyway, if you're interested in the Citroen C1 then I'll give you some information about it.
-So it's a 1.0 Petrol that can do nearly 60 mpg and a full tank would cost you £35 giving you about 500 miles if you drive moderately.
--The 1.0 Petrol engine in the Citroen is not a Citroen engine, or even a French engine. It's Japanese and Toyota's engine! This is very good thing, the Japanese tend to make mechanically sound cars so you should be prone from major repairs for a while.
So that's my advice on what first car to get, The Citroen C1. However if you don't care about a black box then get a Mazda 2, great all round car, great up hills, quiet cabin, good fuel economy, cheap, looks like a brand new car with a private plate and just an all round amazing car, just wish it wasn't nearly £2000 without a black box.
Thanks for reading and I hope this helped you pick your first car within these price ranges!
