A mate (honest) is looking at buying a 2004 Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi PD estate smile

Are there any particular downsides to these cars? They seem to go on forever, cheap as chips (relatively) to buy, and a tank of diseasil lasts forever.

Gotta be a catch somewhere.... scratchchin

Can't think of a downside - mine ran faultlessly to about 160k miles and was one of the best cars I've had. I plugged a chip in to give about 180bhp mind... smile

You can have all sorts of issues with these engines, not completely issue free. But what is!

Generally a reliable Engine but a few issues to be aware of.

Sticking turbo vanes can leave you in limp mode. I found a few bottles of turbo cleaner in the tank actually worked (to my surprise).

Injector loom is under the rocker cover, meaning it gets covered in oil and eventually degrades causing a missfire.

EGR valves can gum up.

Generally nothing a semi competent mechanic can't DIY.

I've had two in Fabia guise, both were really decent cars, covering 70k miles in each with no real issue.

The reason I've had two was that the first got wrecked in a flood so I just went out and bought a near identical one. Says it all really.
