Wanting a weekend car, bit of fast flash. £27k ish max. Up to a couple of year old the newer the better. I love the 335d x drive touring, the wife wants a golf r! Suggestions welcome.

Out of those two, the Golf R.

Unless you cover some serious mileage on your weekends, then I'd be looking at a C63 Estate as a weekend family car.. it's a touch older than you want (not that it matters IMO, but if so chuck a private reg on it?!) but I can't think of much else in that price range which will combine practicality, pace, fun and flash as well as that car.

If you want flash, then I would look at a CLS63. Will most likely be at the maximum end of your budget, or might even push it closer to £30k but it definitely is a looker imho.

Neither are weekend flash cars. What are your requirements?

Thanks for the replies, to be honest I don’t really know what I want! We have a caravelle which is our family car, the wife has a cooper s convertible for summer and she also has a 4x4 pick up which we use for the farm so we have all our must haves covered. We are wanting something a bit special to go to the coast in on a weekend or for a meal out at night, just something we can get in and think ‘wow this is nice’!!! We both like to get our foot down so something quick is preferable as is a petrol but the on paper figures for the 335d look fantastic which is why I choose that. It won’t do many miles.

I have run a 335d Touring for just under 2y

It smokes most things from the lights or on slip roads
It does 50mpg at 70mph on the motorway
It takes a family of 4 and their luggage for a weeks holiday in reasonable comfort
Its a decent daily driver around town and is a good size for car parks

And yet when it goes back to the lease company I doubt Id get another one, its lacked the character and dare I say it flaws that most of my other cars have had. Its defined by the engine and once youve used launch control the first 500 times the novelty wears off smile Weirdly I'll prob chop it in for a Volvo V90 or E Class wagon - both 4 pot slugs!

Cheers

I have a 335d saloon, for 16k Miles. An extremely capable car, engine and transmission (ZF8), great for slipping out of gravelly junctions onto fast A roads. Great on Mways. Competent on B roads in Scotland, the kind with grass down the middle. And yet..?, well its capability and competence tend to dull the driving experience. Not really a bother for me, and I will keep it for several years, and then drop to a slower, smaller car. I did have my mind on a GT86, but needed full rear seats. However, a GT86/BRZ may be worth it for weekends. Not as quick in a straight line as a 335d, but great on back twisties. Also, it is petrol and non-turbo, so that may suit a weekend car, and to pop to the shops. The Golf R has a reputation as a target car for nicking.

my missus has a 435d x drive cab. She camefrom a A3 and tested S3, golf R, 240i, amg a45 too. Yes its a oil burner but with the zf8 auto its very much a rocket ship. In the end the 4 series was more grown up (shes 42) and wasnt much more on a lease compared to the others (except AMG)

From what you’ve said and your current garage, you don’t need ¡newer the better'.

Get a classic 2seater sports car. There are loads to choose from and look much better than a modern estate car.

TVR Griffith?
911?
Merc SL?
Austin Healey?

If you don’t do many miles, this is the sort of car I’d be choosing.

Best of luck.

Absolutely this.

Having had a Golf R for 3 years it's certainly not a weekend car. It's a compromise car. It goes fast but also does the day to day stuff very well, it's certainly not exciting.

I drove the 335d touring and it was very fast, like it a lot, but wasn't an out and out drivers car, possibly not special enough for a weekend blaster.

I recommend checking out the Volvo V60 polestar if you want something a bit special in an estate car. Sold in very limited numbers, polestar took the t6 3.0 base car and added a hybrid turbo, 370mm Brembos, Ohlins fully adjustable suspension, pilot super sports, very un-volvo like switchable exhaust etc etc etc. The raw numbers are good but the way the car goes down a road is fabulous, you can tell it has been designed and built by proper enthusiasts. Practical enough for a pram and all associated gubbins, yet not out of place at any track or cars and coffee meet.
