Angry residents are turning some Notts roads into 'no go' areas for learner drivers.
It is claimed that residents have:
- Verbally abused drivers during lessons and tests
- Stood behind cars during manoeuvres
- Protested to the Driving Standards Agency.
Now 'no go' warning notices at three Notts test centres list streets L-drivers should avoid.
Instructors claim it limits where they can take learners, affecting their driving progress. The problem has been caused by the rising number of learners.
Instructor Lee Burrows, 31, of the A-Level Driving School in Gedling, said: "We are starting to run out of places to go.''
He believes residents need to be more lenient.
Civil engineer Chris Harrison, 47, of Duncroft Avenue, Gedling, said: "You can get four or five cars on the avenue at once, they come in waves."
The DSA's Nottingham-based national headquarters confirmed instructors were asked not to use certain roads if residents complained.

So, when they all move to a less suitable area, and so get even more complaints, and so are barred from that area even more quickly, and then move on to an even less suitable area..............
Truly the lunatics have taken over the asylum! What on Earth is the "Driving Standards" Agency doing making "popular" practice roads "No Go" areas for lessons (No go roads for L-plate drivers/L-plates are driving wedge, Post, April 25)?
Are these roads popular because they are the most suited for the purpose, or least suited? Surely all that this will result in is learners having to use less suitable roads, which will lead to an even higher level of complaints, which presumably will therefore lead to those areas being decreed as "No Go", with the whole sequence spiralling out of control until the least suitable roads are finally used by, and subsequently barred to, learners.
Or is this all part of some kind of national or local government anti-car conspiracy designed to prevent any more safe, legal drivers being trained?
As for those blithering idiots standing behind learners' cars, and even dropping bins behind them, which bit of Rule 15 of the Pedestrian Section of the Highway Code don't they understand: Reversing vehicles. Never cross behind a vehicle which is reversing, showing white reversing lights or sounding a warning? Do they need the reason for that rule spelling out?
Is it any wonder that the formerly falling fatality figures first flatlined and are now showing an increasing trend for the first time in half a century if this is the level society has sunk to?

It does sound like they get a series of learner drivers all gadding around on their street at the same time. I look out of my window and picture my road being used all the time by a series of L drivers all day and I know that it would annoy me too.
I would bet that those 3 areas being used are being overused and that's where the problem starts.

I live near the area in question and it is very much learner central with lots of cars around the place most days. However the place where I practiced in my lessons was the same with lots of cars around and queues of learners waiting to reverse round corners and do 3 point turns. Some places are just best suited for such things and should be used like this!

there are a few driving schools that seem to think that practicing parallel parking on my car, constantly, is a good thing.

Once every so often, fine.
Several times I week that I notice (and there will be countless more that I dont) isnt.
There have to be thousands of corners that are clearly sighted with low through traffic that are appropriate to learn to reverse round, lots of clear roads with one or two parked cars you can parallel park behind etc. Using a select few is simply laziness and really is unfair on the people who live there.
Having said that there is no excuse for the level of reaction mentioned in the article.
We get a parade of Learner drivers though our estate most days. It is a pain in the arse. They normally only come after 9am when 90% of the estate population are out at work. I have no problem with this, unlike my neighbour, who had his car reversed into (whilst on his drive ) by a learner who "got it a bit wrong"!
When they are there between 5 - 7pm, this p155es me off. There are children playing, as well as residents goign about their buisness.

I live on such a street. The thing is, there is a test centre on the next street. My wife is an instructor and know the examination routes. Our street is used for practice because it is the one that most examiners will use for the test.
Instructors are supposed to stop a manouver, to allow any waiting traffic through. They should not take time to complete it, holding other cars up (that's what my wife has been told anyway)
As for the timings, this a problem we have. My wife became an instructor so she could work between dropping the kids off and picking them up from school. However, most people are busy working or at school/college or Uni during the day. My wife often starts lessons at 5am, and finishes at 9pm sometimes - and has to work through the rush hours.
