Values all over the place?
Discussion
What is it with used car values at the moment? Just bought a 17plate 330d MSport with a lot of options ticked. 9.5k miles and main dealer. For what I paid, the first owner hasn't just taken a bath... he's drowned in nearly £20k depreciation in 12 months. For such a desirable model, great for me, but whats going on!
Reflected in an appauling trade in value on my 09 330d lci, 120k, full main dealer history, really high spec and le mans blue. Not wanted for anything and 12 months mot. I was hoping for £5.75k. Not even close. Still thinking about selling privately or even just parking it up and SORN and looking at it for the great memories it holds on many holiday adventures into Europe!
Is this all just diesel fear or manufacturers pumping up a market that doesn't really exist?

I've been looking at E46 330cd for a while now. Their values seem to have plummeted and unless they've just had servicing for more than the value of the sale they seem to be almost unmovable.
Plenty with 130,000 miles upwards for around £3 grand that just aren't selling. If they're auto they don't seem to be selling at all.
I know they're a bit long in the tooth but they're great in three litre form.

I had a 320td then a 123d for nearly a decade overall (did about £16K on that in 6 years) - until I saw the light and moved onto straight 6 petrols!
6 or 7 weeks ago I bought an E91 325iSE on 132K miles for less than £3K.
I would have liked an E46 Touring, but sadly they all seem to have rusty wheel-arches.

Ah, discounts, of course. Perhaps I should take px and run. Its a bit galling given I've made a point of keeping the e90 in quality condition and I'll try not to think of the 4 nearly new Michelin pilot sport 4's that are on it!
If the new one is as staggeringly competent in all areas as the old one, then a 330d is still right for me given the longish distances I tend to do. If people are walking away from diesel in droves then it confirms the new one will have to be with me for the long term.

It's not just diesel, it's petrol also. The depreciation on these mainstream BMWs is catastrophic. Example. I bought a 440i M Sport in December 2017, list was £51k, I paid £41k. Circumstances were such that I had to consider moving it on after just 3 months and 2500 miles. Was offered £27k by the dealer I'd just bought it from. That, as you say, is a very deep bath. Sod it, I'll just keep it. It's a lovely car. Reflected in an appauling trade in value on my 09 330d lci, 120k, full main dealer history, really high spec and le mans blue. From what I've seen E46 Values are all over the place full stop! Unless it's a 316i they can still be variable.
As an example
-Mate bought am '00 328i Manual Touring with 156k for £700. It's needed more cash at it as the car was dangerous to drive then (15 year old tyres, and a shot clutch along with a cooling issue) but it's fine now
-Another bought an '05 330Ci Auto on 80k. It had issues like sensors etc. which he apparently rectified. That went for £2.5k.
-CCA sold two Individuals They were:
-an '05 Technoviolet/Cream 330Ci Auto 'vert with 22k on the clock. £13.5k
-an '04 (I think) Estoril Blue/Grey 330Ci 'vert with 77k on the clock. £7.5k.
The truth is alot of sellers have woken up. People aren't willing to pay for the good cars with mileage etc. out of the equation and will only go off what's on paper; low owners and low mileage and expect the cars to magically be perfect despite the newest example now being 12 years old. They'll happily spend hours and hours of their lives finding the 'right' one however, and price the 'good' cars against the dross, which there is plenty of!
Car of this age don't maintain themself, high or low mileage. Rubbers age, owners neglect things because it seems expensive at the time, etc.
My friend's 328i was near the Dross category but it's taken about the same money again and more to get it decent (Clutch & DMF, 4 new Eagle F1s, Some bushes, some paintwork, some electrics sorting like hedgehog, keys etc and brakes/wheel bearing, It seems people want this work done to a car for free! Fortunately for him, someone had spent a fortune prior to the neandrathol of an owner he bought it off; things like bushes (albeit Meyle which he changed again due to them going soft), dampers for Sachs items etc.

And worth £25k when you look to trade in 12 months down the line with 10k on it.https://www.marshall.co.uk/bmw/used-cars/8039085-b...
6 series a lovely way to burn cash.
Very good cars, but financial suicide.
I purchased an 08 lci 330d msport touring 18 months ago. I was looking for specific spec, and it took me over 3 months to find the right car after seeing stuff not as described and others that drove really badly.
As I know i'll be putting miles on it I wanted something sub 75k really. All the cars in my budget of around 7k at the time had much higher miles than that, and were generally pretty rough.
I upped the budget by 25% and straight away found one, 77k same owner for previous 8 years. Drives spot on, and interior looked and smelt like a 10k mile car - only issues was the usual alloy corrosion.
So from when I was looking the better cars were holding value compared to the run of the mill average condition ones. I tend to keep my daily drivers for quite some time so it was worth weeding out the better one.
After 8 hours cleaning and a full service inc disks and pads over easter:

Looks great! Didn’t realise they came with the right engine (M57) that late. As I know i'll be putting miles on it I wanted something sub 75k really. All the cars in my budget of around 7k at the time had much higher miles than that, and were generally pretty rough.

The future’s bright for the E46:

Quick update. It's gone and did eventually get something closer to what I wanted, although still probably at the trade rather than the retail end of the price spectrum. New one here and still getting used to it. It's smoother, faster, better tech and quieter but there's definitely been a loss from E90 to F30 in steering feel. It's nowhere near as tactile or engaging as the old one. It's going to take some time to re-calibrate my expectation.
