I am after thoughts. I have been after an M2 for a while and been tracking prices. As has been discussed on a number of other threads prices are dropping down with a pre registered 2018 one with all the kit being available for around £43k. I usually buy outright so PCP deals don’t really interest me. However, I have noticed that the M4 is also coming down rapidly with a pre registered, late 2017 ones available for £47k. So in the scheme of things only a small jump. I have driven both and do like the nimble feel of the M2 but the M4 does feel more special inside and has more kit. However, this was only a quick, half hour test drive from the dealer. I would welcome thoughts on how the two cars compare and opinions on if it’s worth going for the M4 for relatively little price difference.

The other concern I have with the M2 is having two small children (4 and 1) and if the car will be big enough? My wife doe have the obligatory people carry so it will only be used as the second car option with the kids but I still will need to be able to ferry them about with kit.

Thanks in advance.

I'm having the very same dilemma but buying used M4/M3 or M2 - be interested to see what owners who have experience have to say.

I've currently got an F10 M5 but have been told by the Mrs if I get something cheaper I can also get an Atom which I've been hankering after for a while

I've looked at both the M2, M3 and M4 as they all have decent deals available and I'm assuming they will only get better as the models run out

The Mrs has the family car (Q5) but I do nursery drop off 2 days a week so only 2 doors on the M2 or M4 would put me off, so for me its an M3.

I guess it's going to depend on how much you lug the kids around and how much of a trauma getting them into car seats in the back would be

Do you trust your wife ? wink

I mean, couldn't she drive the M2 and when you're with the kids you slum it in the people carrier IF there's a need for more space.

I've only sat in both cars at dealership and against the M2 the seats didn't feel as supportive and the whole feel wasn't that special, compared to my old M3 at home and the M4 I also sat in.

BUT placing much more weight in owner experiences, it's a fun car, smaller can be best, so if after extended test drive/s it's your favorite I'd say slum it rather than let impracticalities because of its smaller size put you off.

I can't comment on which to go for but I can say that I wouldn't worry too much about the M2 and your kids. We have an XC90 for the practical stuff so I went out and got a 3 door M135i thinking that it would just be used for my commute and the occasional weekend drive. Turns out with changes in her shifts, I'm using my car a lot more for my kids. OK one is 17 so not really a kid but my youngest is 2. It was difficult getting him in and out when he was a baby but I'd say it's a slight inconvenience now rather than a total nightmare.

Saying that I did see a lovely black M3 in my local dealer last month and I tried to sell the idea to the misses by saying how practical extra doors and rear space would be.

Yeah, that didn't wash...

I just bought the wife a late 2017 M4 CP Conv LCI in Silverstone II at £46,500. 3000 on the clock with great spec. Thought that was a good deal. Paid cash and did the deal just before the end of March. Think it was a CBS car. We went out together yesterday with our younger two in the back (3 and 5). Plenty of room, getting them in and out was easy enough but wouldn't want to do it every day. Putting their seats in was a lot easier with the roof down. Sun was out this morning but she took her Discovery so make of that what you will.

I was going to say yes to this question but remembered that she crashed the z4m I had a few years ago into the back of our neighbours parked car. I have also come home tonight to find that she has scratched the alloy wheel on the people carrier we have had for all of two months. Doh!

I am moving more towards the M4 but will continue to watch the price as I would prefer one with the competition pack if possible.

I’ve owned both and there is no comparison. M2 by a mile. M4 felt numb, couldn’t put the power down, sounded worse and was nowhere near as nimble and as much fun as the M2. Nicer interior in the M4 and obviously a bit more room, but I miss my M2. I was glad to get rid of the M4. Think that says it all.

It all depends on what you want from the car. If your priority is an engaging and rewarding driving experience, the M2 will be your best choice. If you want a car that is Lee engaging but comfortable, well Specced, the M4 Is the better car

I had nearly talked myself into the M4 until I saw both cars in the showroom and realised the M2 was the one I really wanted. As you are saying the pricing is pretty close, the M2 is practical enough for kids, go with whichever one you will be happiest seeing in the driveway.

The thing with these cars is they always sound better on the outside than inside frown

I agree about putting the power down, I have been a passenger in one and it always breaks traction if you floor it.

That's too be expected I guess in a high power RWD car wink

I have an M2 and two massive teenagers and they fit fine plus it has a surprisingly big boot - we drove to France 4 up with luggage and it was no problem.
One up the car is a total hoot - loads of fun; small, nimble, not too much power and it sounds great.
Interior is a bit basic, but the pros massively outweigh the cons

I was originally looking at an M4 but bought an M2.

I was torn, more power and more inside in an M4 or a smaller more compact M2 with less ‘stuff’ in the cabin.

The overall deal breaker for me was the look of an M2. In my opinion they look so much better than the 4 and their presence on the road is mustard !

Looking for a new daily driver and was about to pull the trigger on a Golf Clubsport S due to good reviews and residuals . But on Friday I saw this M2 new at my local dealer which looked good value £41.8k .(£51k list) So I’ve put a deposit down . Even at this discount am I in for a big bill I’m 6 months ? Being a M2 virgin whats the essentials spec wise I need to check ?

Looks very nice mate I've been close to putting a deposit down on an M2 that was 45k at my local dealer. Is this an 18reg? Did you go down the PCP route? I'd be interested in the figures if you wouldn't mind sharing the details.

This, as the M2 should have been, and will kill the value of existing ones.

So where do you see a 6 month old car priced at the end of summer ?

I get the Compitition will impact but is that not priced in already with £9k off ? Or were these always heavily discounted .....

The two things the current M2 need are less weight and better damping. The new car follows the usual Current BMW thinking. More power and more weight. Akin to driving a passenger around

Don’t forget that the current M2 is one of the best M cars for a generation. If you can pick up a new M2 for low 40’s that’s a lot of car the money
