Hey,

I’m not sure if anyone can help me here? I have a 64plate 116d, only 32k miles, however when I turned the engine off today it’s started to make this noise.

I’m clueless with cars! Does anybody know what it may be? I’m not able to get it to a garage until later in the week :-(

Thanks!

Anything to do with the vacuum take off for the brake servo? Once the engine stops is the servo making this noise as it looses it's vacuum? Can't really think of anything, just a wild guess......................

Good guess!

I took it to the garage today and off a first look they’ve suggested it’s a ‘vacuum solenoid’. I personally have no idea what that is! I’m just hoping it’s not the timing chain too because my engines running really loud when idle, but maybe that’s due to the vacuum? confused

Hi,
Just been researching the noise which you have posted in your video.
I have a 420D which is making the same noise when turning the car off.
What exactly was wrong with yours as I imagine I have the same problem you had.
Thanks!

Just listened to it and yes it does sound like a solenoid (relay). I don't own a BMW 1 series so I can't really help further.

Cars used to have only one or two solenoids, but now have a few zillion. The fault may not be with the solenoid itself, but with the circuit that's turning it on and off.
